Awe

I am awed and inspired by the inaugural address. It was so moving and it was wonderful to see both Michelle and Barack Obama walking together. It put me in mind of other speeches and when I read Dottie's post, "A Soldier's Farwell", this is what I remembered..

I was 2l and living in Fort Belvoir, Va. My husband had been called back into the army and we were living on the base. A number of soldiers had served with McArthur and revered him. When he was recalled, a huge crowd met him at the airport. The plane landed and he got out and walked quite a distance in order to be able to salute everyone. I know that there was and is a lot of controversy surrounding him. He was a hero to us and I will never forget his farewell address where he said, "Old Soldiers Never Die, They Just Fade Away."

I will never forget being at the airport that evening and how cold it was, but I am so glad I didn't miss it. Wish I could have been in D.C. today.
