Scales-yikes!

My favorite begonia is infested with scales. The infestation killed one begonia already- one with smaller leaves that I did not treat in time. I did not notice the scales until I saw that plant was dying and looked closer to see why. The only remedy I knew of was to wash the scales off with alcohol. Then I learned about oil-based insecticides and picked some up yesterday. It was the only oil-based insecticide on the shelves and is not recommended for indoor use, but the plant is on my porch and I am desperate. I will spray it outside then bring it back on the porch. The affected plants (three in total) are all on the same side of the porch. The plants on the other side do not appear affected. I have been spraying them with an insecticidal soap to ward off the spreading of the infestation. Hope it works!

While I was it it, I photographed the other side of my porch where I paint. Nothing new on my easel- that is the most recent one that I showed you, which of course, I made some changes to. The ones on the back easel are just there... no reason. Just need to be moved into storage.

During the summer months I can only paint at night when it is cooler. Forget early morning... I sleep through the early morning hours because I am awake until 2:00-3:00 am, sometimes later.

When I saw the title, first I thought of fish. Then I thought you weighed yourself, so I was really surprised that it was something on the plants.

Thanks for the "memories". We all have our plant problems, don't we!
We'd never make it together. My bedtime hours are 10:30-6:30!!

and.... there are the many miles between us, but you are my favorite virtual "boy-friend"! Well, you are a "boy" and a friend! Sincerely wish you the best with your new lady friend, but a girl can still dream.

I love plants and my north wall is full. My begonias are dying from this
heat. Rex is not doing well and I finally figured out that with unsalted
food he wasn't getting enough sodium and potassium. He is so hot natured.

Yes, animals need salt too!

I've never been a plant person. I usually end up killing everything.

I've been terrible about my plants for the past three years. Once, I had a flower garden and wonderful indoor plants, but that is pretty much in the past.

I haven't heard of scales either. Best wishes in your begonia recovery efforts.
I'm trying to grow some herbs in pots. I started with them indoors in my southern windows, but not enough full sun. So I moved them to hanging pots outside, not soon enough to save the basil. The rosemary and the parsley are doing well, but the lemon thyme is looking like it has heatstroke. Can't seem to figure out the proper amount of water. Sigh. Wish me luck!

Scales are one of the worst infestations you can get because they are one of the hardest things to treat. Regular insecticides don't face them or their eggs.

Your poor plant. I had never heard of scales before. I am going to be diving into the world of houseplants with the office at my new job. I seem to suffer from having a brown thumb. I am hoping to be more successful.
I am going to have a spider plant, a donkey tail, and a small bamboo.

I would rather they had anything except scales. They are so hard to treat!
