Money Money Money ... .

Our son's started Driver's Ed. He's dreaming of getting a hotrod. Doesn't want to get a job to help pay for it yet cos he thinks he's too young. Okay then, save up what you get from your birthday & holidays, most of your allowance. That just gives us the blank & "I'm in pain" stare in return.

Hubby is a talented man. One of his talents is with cars & trucks. He can fix or find someone to help him fix dang near anything. Being that our son wants a car, we were thinking, "Hey, let's get him to help change a tire & see how the oil gets changed." He's seen it before, but this was meant to be a bit more hands-on. We got the "I'm in pain" stare plus the "I think you two are the biggest morons on the face of the earth" glare. Didn't matter. Poor thing (ha!) still had to help change a tire & get all oily. "I don't need to know how to do any of this anyway." He mumbled & slumped about, "I'll just pay someone to do it!"

Oh!! So he's going to shell out some cash for basics. Cool. Poor sweetie, wish he knew what life was really about. I know, I know, he'll learn soon enough!

So, back to getting a hotrod. On the sly, with his dad, who for lack of respect on my part, isn't the brightest bulb in the box, is egging the son on to buy a car. It won't be until next year, mind you if even then. Additionally, as stated, the kiddo has no cash for that. He's also needing to add to his college fund. So getting back to what I intended to say....the ex is encouraging him to look at cars & trucks & is not guiding him whatsoever. Son comes home from a day with his dad & says, "I'm going to the buy here pay here place. I can get a car for $75 a week." I can do that as long as I don't drive very far for work.

Oh. Dear.

Hubby pipes up about interest, years of a loan, having a nice sized down payment, how many hours & what pay he'd have to get, insurance, maintenance.....Son interjects with much disrespect, "It's all about money, isn't it??"

Oh. Dear.

So much to learn. So much to teach!

Parenting is a real adventure. I wouldn't trade it for the world, but sometimes.....I wish that for a few days, he was back to being a cuddly 3 year old! (Oh, a POTTY-TRAINED, cuddly 3 year old!!!) :)

Oh, yes, the saga of the cars. Okay, first son just had to have a car, poured his saved up $1500 into a clunker that died the first time he drove it long distance. Then we got him the greatest Camaro. It had a new engine and needed paint, but cool nonetheless. At his college a jerk ran a stop sign and tore off the front. So we saved up again and he bought another car -- this time it ran. Finally, when he graduated he got a nice Mazda truck and it's excellent, but he'll tell you all the stories. Younger son got his first car -- a big Ford Crown Vic police model, and all it has brought him is headaches and high gas prices. He is sick of it already and he hasn't had it a year. Funny how reality sets in when they finally own one!

Today, a tank of gasoline to drive around might cost more than the car !!!

That first car can be a rude awakening when it comes to all the things you just mentioned.

lol, I'm glad I have at least 6 more years before I have to go through that with mine. Although he already wants to drive my car
