Learning to Eat It

After all these years of turning my nose up to Sushi, I decided a couple of weeks ago I would give it a try.

I can't believe what I have missing out on!! It's FANTASTIC! I am starting out with vegetable, shrimp and crab since I have never liked raw fish. I am going to try and work myself up to it though.

So far, this is what I love :
California roll
Cucumber roll
" a crunchie" I'm not sure what this is but it is good.
Spring roll.
oh, and wasabi is delicious.

Then I had to learn HOW to eat it.

Step 1:
Pour soy sauce on the small individual plate.

Step 2:
Hold one piece of sushi (including the ball of rice on the bottom) and dip the fish side into the sauce. Avoid dipping the rice into the sauce.

Step 3:
Place the whole piece of sushi in your mouth.

Step 4:
Refresh your mouth with a slice of ginger.

Step 5:
Eat sashimi sushi (individual slices of raw fish) by dipping the fish slices into soy sauce. If desired, order a side dish of rice and take a few bites after each slice of fish.

So.... what's your favorite Sushi?

My two daughters finally got me to try sushi and I liked it. I've eaten lox for years and maybe that prepared me. And I fix horseradish sauce for shrimp and lamb, so wasabi didn't faze me. I notice November has FOUR comments here; she's clearly a sushi true believer!

Good for YOU! Sushi is sort of the generic word for Japanese bite-size hor d'oerves. Raw fish (ahi tuna, yellowtail, etc) over a tiny clump of rice, banded with a strip of "nori" (roasted, toasted seaweed) is called "Sashimi". There is a distinction. But YAY for you for trying it. I LOVE it personally, and when I need my "sushi fix", I'll shop at Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's for a beautiful little tray of California Sushi (usually these are vegetarian, but some places add crab or imitation crab). It is one of the most healthy kinds of food to eat in these times. A note on wasabi: it is horseradish which, as you know, can give you a burn "up the nose" if you use too much. But it sounds like you did GREAT. Hats off to YOU! I'd rather eat sushi than say, escargot. Blech!

Sardines and Soda Crackers. Hey, that's what we call it in Georgia. Sushi is another name for bait.

I like sushi. Most of it has no fish on/in it at all. I think the California rolls have crab (or crab substitutes). The rice is sweetened a little in some sushi. So you actually ate the raw fish kind, Cindy?

My favorite is the california roll. I also love the fish over rice, especially salmon.

My son loves sushi, but I have never tried it. Although you make it sound very tasty, I must have my fish cooked!

the kind that comes out of a can marked "Chicken of the Sea". I had a similar experience with yogurt. Many years ago, the thought of eating that stuff was enough to make me ralph. I tried it finally, and now I love it....especially the strawberry/bananna flavor.

I tried this once by accident (I didn't know what it was) and it wasn't so bad. That is; it wasn't so good. But this post is encouraging! I might try it next time I'm at the buffet.
