After the Moles

Now that the fight with the moles is over, it's time for some grass.
The photo shows the front yard after I had 5 yards of dirt spread to fill in the "ankle breakers." Next, fertilizer, seeds and cover it with straw. I set the timers so it gets watered morning, noon and evening. When the seeds sprout, it's on to the side yard. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Next month, shrubs!

I used to have something digging holes out front, but not lately. Perhaps the last flood wiped them out when the area went under water. That area looks so shady... more like a campsite. Nice!

Thanks John. My whole yard is shaded - except for a 25 foot strip along my side yard fence. That gets about 6 hours of sun. The shade feels cozy for some reason.

With patience--and a shovel--I caught 5 moles this summer! I don't mind the yard damage--it's the garden.

I don't have a food garden but I can see how they would be a pain. My objection is the "ankle breakers." You can't take a step without sinking on a tunnel. Argh!

Back in the seventies when I lived in peninsula, OH, we had a mole infestation in our acre sized lawns. My neighbor said to let the snakes thrive. I hate snakes, but I tried it and stopped chasing the garden and garter snakes out.He even brought me two good-sized ones for a patch of lawn that looked like it had little bomb craters all over it. In a few weeks the moles were done for, and I never ran over a snake with the riding lawn mower again.

Do snakes take care of voles and chipmunks? They are next on my list. I used to have a dog, Bob, who loved nothing better than a dead snake. Every time we mowed over one, he rolled in it. Ugh!

You are more energetic than I am. My impulse would be to get on the phone and call a lawn care outfit. "Fix this, please."

I had one lined up - then my ceiling collapsed and all three dogs have been sick for the last month or so. Thus, it turned into a DIY project. Next month's shrubs will be planted professionally. I hope. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, it's always something.
