Brrr! Put Some Fur On

One of my mom's favorite activities is watching the squirrels on her deck. (She also watches TV.) She even named a few of them, based on certain characteristics. Tail, Balls and Dick were regulars, along with several others.

Mom was quite upset when she saw some were losing their fur. It turns out that squirrels get mange and can pass it to dogs. That worried me so I called the local wildlife rescue outfit. One of the rehabbers suggested a treatment of a drop of Ivermectin on a peanut. I also learned that it is illegal to "put them out of their misery" since they aren't game animals here.

My vet is getting used to my odd requests and thank God for her! She did a lot of research on squirrel mange and determined the correct dose of the medicine. I was able to pick it up today. Tomorrow they get their first dose.

This poor creature is in much worse shape. His tail has lost so much fur it basically just a skeleton.

We all do what we can. I really hate to see any animal suffering.

Never knew the squirrels could be dangerous to the boys. Hopefully they will eat the dose right away and not store it for future use!

Good point - they buried lots of acorns in the back yard last fall. I'll have to watch what they do and adjust if they start carrying them away.
The sickest one got her first dose today. I didn't have any peanuts this morning so I put a drop on bits of cracker and smeared some peanut butter on it. She seemed to like it!

Huzzah for you dear Karen. An object lesson to those who think all animal visitors are pests and need to be offed.

Thanks Teal. I always thought they ate too much of the bird seed but they have been a lot of fun to watch this year. I gave the sickest one her first dose today and hope to dose the others tomorrow.

Thank you so much for doing what you can to help these animals, Cat! May your medicated peanuts offer a much needed cure. I love squirrels! -- and all animals! You are a dear!

I really never appreciated squirrels until watching the ones on mom's deck this year. The sickest one got her first dose this morning. I hope to see the others tomorrow so they can get theirs too. I'll try to photograph their progress.
