Alaska, here I come! Early next month, I fly into Anchorage and stay overnight. Dinner with family and some sightseeing, then I fly to Sitka the next day for about a week. A friend who lives there has plans for Flightseeing and an ATV tour among other adventures. She has worked as a tour guide in several parts of Alaska so she knows the good stuff.
That's a photo she took of the Incentive, a ship featured in The Deadliest Catch tv show.
I'm hoping to see some glaciers and if the conditions are right, the Aurora Borealis.
I've decided to stay at a hostel for part of the time. At about $30 per night, the price is right. That's another new experience and I'm told it's a good way to meet other travelers. I've never taken a vacation alone - so it'll be good to have a friend nearby even though I'm not staying with her.
I've wanted to go since I was in college. My aunt wanted to go since she was very young and finally made it when she was 48. She inspired me to keep reaching for my goals - even if I got old. Um… Old? I wish I was 48 again. I remember thinking that I would get there before I got that old - well I missed that mark but it doesn't matter.
I've read up on Sitka a bit - lots of history there. It's where Russia handed over the keys to the US in 1867 among other things.
I've got some shopping to do - rain gear for the ATV tour is first on my list. There's a great quilt shop in Sitka, so I'll be doing some shopping while I'm there, too. I've got to finalize plans for my mom to go to respite but that should be done on Friday.
I'm open to suggestions for sights to see in Anchorage and Sitka if anyone has been there.
