Cows in the Middle of the Night

It was quite a ruckus around here last night. All through the evening, I kept hearing the cowdog, Buddy, barking off and on. I would look out the windows, but didn't see anything. I figured that it is deer hunters out spot lighting deer which is something that goes on around these parts of the country.

But... in the middle of the night, I heard hoofs running through the yard. My first thought was that a herd of wild horses had shown up which sometimes happens. So, I got my flashlight and in my pajamas... I went outside to find what critters were invading my yard. I saw some black forms moving across the lawn and then these white eyes staring back at me. By then, I figured out that some stray cows had wandered in and were thinking about grazing on my beautiful lawn. I can't say as I blame them because the feed around here is mostly dry at this time of year.

Soooo... with a "ja" or two and a few "shoos", I ran them out the front gate and then made my way back to bed. Since, I've been having trouble sleeping, this chasing cattle in the middle of the night didn't help my situation. The end of this tail is that I finally feel asleep around 5am. Groan!!!!

Buddy the cow dog. I knew a cow dog once - his owner left him in charge of a small herd of sheep and a llama. Every morning they went out into the pasture and every night back to the corral. I went over there to see them and the dog wouldn't let me near. The owner would go check on them every few days, and the dog would sit in the driveway and howl as he drove away. It broke my heart.

Chasing cows in the middle of the night!!! You truly lead such an exciting life there on the ranch! That must be awesome to see the wild horses when they come around.

verah cool picture...nice sunset. a co-worker of mine once had a similar problem only it was the neighbor's mule that kept invading her space. I told her she should go to the neighbor, pound on the door and yell "Get yer ARSS off my lawn"

And you say there's no excitement out in the country. Sounds like a good story for the movies. Course you gotta add cowboys, Indians, shootings, stampedes, and a distressed maiden

Perhaps the best cow photo I've ever seen! Reminds me of my grandpa's favorite poem: I've never seen a purple cow/ I never hope to see one/ But I can tell you anyhow/ I'd rather see than be one.
