Veterans Day

This is from my home town in northern Colorado:

"Berthoud Lions Club veterans did not let the weather deter them from putting up flags at the Greenlawn cemetery in honor of Veterans Day. The twice-yearly event (Memorial Day and Veterans Day) has been done for so many years that none of the participants can remember when it started. Curtis Wilson said he may have been in the original group, but couldn’t be sure. He did remember that the flagpoles were purchased, indicating that he may well have participated in the inaugural posting of the flags.

The crew that shows up early in the morning are all veterans themselves and take pleasure in erecting the row of Flags.

This day Curtis Wilson, John Erickson, Sam MacDonald, Bob Tally, Mike Waldo, John Beck and Gary Wamsley took part of their morning in honor of all veterans."

The bleak day makes the flags really stand out and reminds us that wars are fought in all weather. It's especially poignant this year because a young man, Justin Bauer's grave is near that fence, about even with the third flag down.

Flags in recent years are so prevalent they can lose all meaning, but in that picture I think it is revived. They look beautiful, and right.

I think part of the charm for me is the simplicity of that little town cemetery, Greenlawn. We so often see big flag displays in flashier urban settings.

For the many who fought for freedom

My youngest daughter's dad is a Purple Heart vet from Operation Iraqi Freedom. I never realized what it really meant for these men and women to put their lives on the line until I became acquainted with one. What bravery and selflessness.
The pictures were beautiful.

A lot of vets just seem to be old guys telling old stories, but now we might be fortunate enough to meet vets of the younger generation, and it becomes much more poignant.

I was surprised to come across this in the local paper.

I'm distracted by the snow.Yuck. And it's coming here...just a matter of time. Sure does make the colours of the flags stand out.

It looks like a bitter day. That little town seldom achieves such a poetic sight as these photos.

Pretty neat. Yeah Lions! Sorry I had to quit my club.

I'm sorry you had to quit, too. I think it's such a nice small town thing to do.

Very beautiful in the snow.

It's been bleak and snowy there for several days, finally clearing up some.

With deepest gratitude to all our service members!

Yes, indeed. In a small town it seems more special because they are all our neighbors, not just names on a list.

Every time I see our flag I get tears in my eyes. You never really appreciate what it means until you live in a foreign country like I did. Our National Anthem always makes me cry. God bless America.
comment by gapeach on Nov 14, 2010 7:15 PM ()
I cry during the National Anthem, too, and that song I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas because it speaks to an ideal that we seldom achieve (and I don't just mean snow).

I know all those men, having grown up there, and my dad was in the Lions Club.
