Thomson and Thompson

One of the clues in tonight's Race was a tie-in to the Tin Tin cartoon. The racers were dressed in costumes that looked like Charlie Chaplin, but that wasn't what they were depicting. Here is what they were:

"Thomson and Thompson (original French: Dupont et Dupond) are fictional characters in The Adventures of Tintin, the series of classic Belgian comic books written and illustrated by Hergé.

Thomson and Thompson are detectives of Scotland Yard, and are as incompetent as they are necessary comic relief. While the two are apparently not related as they have different surnames, they are twice referred to as twins or brothers in the original language version of the series.[1] In any case, the two detectives look like twins and can only be told apart by the shape of their moustaches (Thomson's moustache flares out a tiny bit on each side at the bottom).

They are afflicted with spoonerism, are extremely clumsy, are thoroughly incompetent, and usually bent on arresting the wrong character. In spite of this, they somehow get entrusted with delicate missions, such as ensuring security for the Syldavian space project or investigating arms dealing.

The detective with the flared moustache is Thomson (without a "p"), who often describes himself as "Thomson, without a 'p,' as in Venezuela!" and who often remarks, "To be precise...". The detective with the flat moustache has described himself as "Thompson with a 'P,' as in..." and then used words with either a silent "P," or in which the "P" is combined with another letter, losing the "P" sound, such as Philadelphia, psychology and so on."

I love this play on words, will probably watch that movie just to see these guys.

Have not heard of this series, nor these characters, nor story line. Totally out of this loop.

The Tin Tin story has been big in Europe for decades. I don't know why it never was introduced over here - probably no potential to reap millions up until now.

I had heard of TinTin recently so I had a general idea what the Amazing Race task was about. I gather TinTin is huge in Europe. Not so much here, but it will be soon.

McDonalds will probably have Tin Tin Happy Meals.

So weird, guess I'll have to see the movie. When I was in Niagara Falls a few weeks ago, one of the gifts I bought was a Tintin stuffed dog, and I didn't know about the movie. He just had a good expression.

I'd heard of him from listening to BBC Radio shows via the Internet.

I'm out of the loop on this one.

Wait til that grandbaby gets older, you might have to take him to some movies, and then you will be in the loop.

Not many Americans are familiar with Herge or Tin Tin. In my far-off youth I had a pen pal in Europe who was a fan of Tin Tin and he sent me so many of the comics. I got hooked, too. I loved the dog. I saved them all (comics and two books) but they were destroyed when my parents' basement got flooded in Sandusky Ohio while I was in the army. I will go see the movie!

It seemed like most of the young Euro people on the street there in Belgium (or wherever they were) hadn't heard of him, either, since he comes from years ago.

We laughed out loud at the description of describing the names. I'm going to coach Mr. Tbend for the next time someone asks him how to spell his middle name - it's a similar situation, without the "P" as in Venezuela.

It sounds like fun.

Stephen Spielberg is making the movie, one of those animated ones. It'll probably be all the rage.
