Summer is Here

We had a freeze the other night that took out my vegetables and nipped my petunias. The flowers will recover, but the zucchini and tomatoes are zapped. I hadn't thought to cover everything over night because our days have been so warm.

Today was close to 80 degrees, and our days are going to be in the 70s for the next 10 days. Night time lows? Around 45 - 50 degrees, if I can believe the forecast. 35 to 40 will be more like it, but that's warmer than usual for this time of year.

Meanwhile in Las Vegas, the hot weather also lingers, and it was supposed to get up to 100 degrees today. Their overnight lows are warmer than my daily highs, but that's par for the course.

After a spell of rainy weather last week, I went ahead and drained the river pump that we use to irrigate the grass, and now this dry spell looms. Well, too bad. The grass is just going to have to thrive with the moisture from the morning dew.

The river is low, this is what they call 'native flow:' the amount of water it would have at this time of year if there wasn't a huge reservoir controlled by a reclamation dam upstream from us.

It's the perfect level for fly fishing, and the fishing has been excellent.

They hang around town all the time, eating grass and landscape plantings.

Finally, my geraniums are full of blooms. It only took the whole summer!

Summer's last gasp is sometimes the prettiest, isn't it?

The guy has a beautiful set of antlers but the female is quite plain. Isn't
that the way of it in the animal kingdom!

Dare I say--and in the human world??? No, I better not!

He gets all the attention and she does all the work. The elk fest is coming up, when the males face off to see who's the strongest.

Just when I think it'd be getting consistently cooler for you, it gets warmer.... I guess you have to be prepared for anything! Here we're starting the yin yang of cooler daily temps in the 60s and morning fog. For some reason, the petunias in the front garden are loving it, blooming like crazy.

It's a banana belt up here this year, picnic weather for sure. I'm saving lots of money on propane for heat, and am sure the fox likes it. Meanwhile the tree squirrels are working all day every day to store up pine cones.

It's warm here too but our rainy season has begun.

I'm looking longingly at your weather on radar and pining for it to find its way down here.

No--I do see "Keep Out"

They don't look like fly fish to me--looks like deer!!!''

I tired to read the sign--what does it say?

Very funny, Martin. It says Posted - No Trespassing - Keep Out. But elk can't read.
