End of Summer

We had a busy summer, but now it's ending. Mr. Troutbend and Buddy the Interstate Cat are driving back to Las Vegas tomorrow, leaving early in the morning.

The last few days he (Mr. Tbend, not the cat) has been like a tornado doing projects, and it's not as if he didn't do anything all summer, these were the last little bits.

Yesterday he drained the water out of the pipes in the small rental cabin, then was up on the roof of our house putting chicken wire in the roof vents in hopes of keeping squirrels out of the attic. Every so often a squirrel will drop into the exhaust vent over our stove. It scrabbles around for a couple of days and then either escapes or dies in there, but I've never smelled a smell that would indicate it died in there.

Next thing I knew he was mowing the front lawn and then starting the pump in the river to irrigate the yards. Today he put chicken wire in the culvert so maybe the beavers couldn't go up there and cut down trees, started the tractor, and rotated the tires on his car.

Here is the wood he cut up the mountain a bit and carried down to the woodpile:

At the peak of summer we had more than 70 hummingbirds, and now are down to maybe 10 at our house, and 5 or 6 at the other cabins.

I would guess that Gary is letting the wood season.

It's already dried out pretty good - the trees died last year from the pine beetles, so this year he cut it down and started splitting it. I haven't tried burning any of it yet. He also hauled down a good-sized aspen from up the side stream that the beavers cut down. We never thought we'd be wrapping the trees out in the forest with chicken wire to protect them from the beavers, not a house in sight.

Mike already stacked five cords of wood.He is all done. Now what we need to get the chimney cleaned. Then we are all set for the winter.
Also hope to get our generator installed.
But Summer is not ending here.
We are going to have a heat wave all week.WoooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I think we are having the hottest days of the summer these last couple of weeks.

And didn't you tell Fredo you just made a blueberry pie? Who's to eat it? Does it keep for 48 hours?

Some people dropped in, and ate a lot of it, then the last bit just went to Las Vegas. But I thought of you when I was boxing it up with a spoon for the road.

Mr. T sounds amazing. He must be in really great shape. You must be busy too. When do you go back?

He got a good workout this summer. I go back at the end of October.

He has been nearly as busy as the beavers, hasn't he?

A lot of it was keeping up with the beavers, so it was like a race between the two.

Do you feel sad?

I'm sorry to see the summer end and today's breeze has a wistful note to it.

Tell him he can't leave yet. He hasn't chopped that wood.

Hadn't thought of that, would have been worth a try.
