Spring Clean Up

I was browsing through the paper and came across an advertisement for the Hydroscreen. It is a water-driven machine that cleans the trash - plant stalks, leaves, as well as paper from farm irrigation ditches.

It was invented maybe 50 years by the Lebsack brothers here in northern Colorado, and a couple of them farmed our farms for us, so we got to see the invention in action and various stages of evolution.

The ditch water flows through a screen that catches the debris, and a number of push broom heads mounted on pair of chains clean the screen. This is powered by the water flowing through a water wheel, so no electricity is required to install it in a ditch wherever needed.

The Lebsacks have since sold the business to someone outside their family, but the version now being marketed is very recognizable.

We're going to visit my farm sometime this week. It's been very dry up until some good rain last week that was the farmers' delight. It's all about the weather when you're a farmer.

I recall those farm days! Farmers are never satisfied! It's either too dry or too wet. It's never just right!!!

Most farmers are right-wing. My dad was not. He was a dyed in the wool Democrat. He idolized FDR and said that he probably was closer to a socialist than anything. His favorite advice to us kids, which we heard over and over was: "If you want hard times, just vote for a Republican, and I guarantee you'll get them." Must have worked! We all are Democrats.

When I talk to a farmer, the weather is always a safe topic, and not just to break the ice. They are pretty right-wing on politics, so I never go there if I can help it.

As steely looking as something from space.

Even the Amish would use these, they are so low tech. Heck, I think the Amish would use a space ship if it suited their purpose, they are very practical.

But the water speed/volume has to be powerful enough to make the thing work? Interesting concept. Never saw one (or never seen one, as they say in Indiana).

The ditches don't flow fast, and definitely the volume makes the big difference in providing the power. Our ditch water has to go through pipes and sprinkler heads, so it's important to get out the debris. You all's are mostly for drainage, I'm thinking, so the water's mission is to get to the river.

Makes me want to have a farm.

I really enjoy having something to do with farming. The farmer does all the hard work and I get to enjoy the scenery. This year I'm going to see if he'll let me drive the giant harvester across the yard.

My brother and sister-in-law couple use a Hydro Beaver Screen on their farm in Kansas — lolol — as the dear critters are clogging up the flow of their streams.

We're girding up for the annual Battle with Bucky. Yesterday we walked around decided which trees he can have and which ones need more chicken wire around them. He's upstream somewhere - we can see the peeled sticks in the river.

Looks a bit like a drum carder.

I've always thought it was great that they started out using regular shop broom heads. Now that there are various widths the brushes are custom made.

You are getting too technical for me--is there an equivalent of the AAA for the hydroscreen???
comment by greatmartin on May 16, 2011 12:11 PM ()
There should be something like that for folks who've sold their farm to developers and miss the romance of growing things, forgetting the heartbreak of crop disasters.
