Ace Hardware

Today I went into little town (as opposed to the larger town further away) to the Ace Hardware store to take advantage of their coupons. They sure have a lot of employees at that small store. Mr. YouKnow says that's the reason their prices are so high. Well, I am trying to support the local economy more, spread it around a bit.

This past year or so instead of having a sale on selected items, every savings off Ace's retail price involves mailing in a rebate request. That just doesn't do it for me, sorry, so I avoid those opportunities to save.

This past week they sent out their coupon book, rebates not required. I'd been waiting for it because I wanted one of their plastic watering cans and a 25 cent fly swatter. I also bought some impulse items not covered by coupons. Needless to say, Mr. Troutbend had stayed at home, because he always gets very haughty and disapproving when I browse and shop at hardware stores, "you don't need that" written all over his face. Since I never shop for clothes or knick knacks, I figure letting loose once a year in the hardware store is okay. Besides, I like wandering around just seeing what they've got on offer in case I ever need something in a big hurry.

This will do me for another year or two.

I like your rationalizations. I know them when I hear them!

I'm good at rationalizing, it comes from seeing the glass as half full.

I got the point--I remember when you were fun! KIDDING!! Wait that doesn't sound right--I better quit while I'm ahead--or am I????

You silly! I used to think I had a sense of humor, but sometimes I wonder.

Nuts. I forgot I'm on the PC not the Mac. Effing interface. This is my reply to Teal's comment.

Now this is my reply to my reply to Teal. It'd be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Logging off now.

Back in my less secure days I kept loose track of what he spent on his hobbies and I spent at least a percentage on my hobbies, however loosely I wanted to define what is a hobbie. If I was doing that today, just one year of cigar purchases would more than cover many of my spending sprees at Ace.

This one here belongs with Teal's comment.

My local Ace hardware seems to have better plants that Lowes or Home Depot.
I like Home Depot and if I can find someone to wait on me, I collar them
for the rest of my visit.

I'm getting all my plants etc. from Gateway Garden Center in Loveland in the old part of town, a mom and pop establishment. The only people who go there are the old folks, I don't think the younger generations even know it exists.

My favorite "hardware" stores are those that combine home goods as well as tools and hardware. There are such stores in NYC, but I haven't seen any down here. Have you asked Mr. T if he'd rather you were a shopaholic in women's wear? As for the "you don't need that" look, it is usually me that does that because when it comes to shopping, I'm the one waiting in the spouse seat while Ed goes nuts over "bargains".

Dear Teal, your reply is above.

I always seem to have questions at hardware/home stores, and searching for help at Home Depot is like looking for archaeological relics in the Sahara. So I don't mind paying a bit more for readily accessible informed human help at Ace Hardware. I am also very picky as to the source of the products I buy, and Ace seems to usually have a product made in the U.S.

It's fun to go there because the employees (60s something men, no women) kid each other a lot. A customer was telling the cashier about a surprise birthday party for his wife, and another clerk yelled across the store "don't tell HIM, he's got the biggest mouth in town."

Go to the Dollar Tree store--same things but even cheaper!!!

Not really the point - I was trying to support the locally owned hardware store.
