Rocks and Rivers

It's finally the hot days of summer, and unlike most years, we are not getting the afternoon rains like we usually do. There are storms in the area, but they miss us. We were lucky yesterday, though, because the rain fell on a nearby forest fire and went a long way toward putting it out.

A few weeks ago there was a rock slide that closed our main highway for several hours. Instead of coming from formations near the road, the car-sized boulders broke off 'way up the side of the mountain and tumbled to the highway.

It was fun touching the raw surfaces of the boulders that were cleared away because they have not been exposed to the weather so they had a roughness about them. They are mostly pink granite with large veins of mica. This side was out toward the weather, so has a lot of lichen on it.

Here are some pot holes eroded into the rock over the centuries. I would love to see the water cascading through these headed for the river.

This is what the river looks like where it happened, it looks like a Coors Beer advertisement:

I love your photos (when I'm patient enough to wait for them to download--or is it upload?)! I'm so glad I'm familiar with the region.

it does look like a coors light commercial! Too funny. Beautiful though, truly beautiful...

Sorta makes a person thirsty for a cold one right about now.

When I'm driving in the mountains in Colorado, I always have nightmares about one of those huge boulders falling on my car and obliterating the car and ME!

Even a rock as small as a fist would ruin your day if it hit your car. I operate on the It Won't Happen To Me (I hope) principle.

There's a lot of xerascape around here and people use boulders to keep cars from making a turn on their lawns. Ed loves grass. I had to get used to Florida grass that, to me, looks scrawny compared to northern grass. There's so much to see in wooded areas. I wish I could have both sea and woods.

Ideally, we'd all be rich enough to maintain at least three or four homes so we could spend time in our favorite places at the perfect season for that location. I'd like to spend a month or two a year in Vermont when the leaves change.

They are beautiful. I wish I had some big chunks.

Yeah, I'll be you do. There are some really nice mossy rocks, about the size of a bushel basket, under our various spruces and firs that my mother planted 30 years ago, but now the trees have spread out so the rocks are barely visible. Those would be what you want for your yard. But they are still very heavy, so dream on.
