Animal Sightings

We were out watching Bucky, our resident beaver last evening, and two yearling mule deer, both bucks, came along. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera. They did not spook when they saw us, and came closer, eating the bushes as they checked us out. These could be last year's little tiny fawns that grew up here.

Here's Bucky Beaver, taken last year.

He used to cut down only aspens and willows, leaving the evergreens alone, but has developed a taste for fir trees.

Before he cuts down the whole tree he prunes away the lower branches, so that makes it easier for us to wrap chicken wire around the trunk and protect it from Bucky himself.

I think beavers used to be on the endangered species list but have been removed. They are cute but they sure can lay waste to trees.

We have gone over to the live and let live camp with regards to the beaver, but maybe if there was more than one we'd change our tune.

one of the good things about living out in the woods is all the variety of animals one encounters. Since moving out here I have encountered my first antelope and bufallo....not to mention sage brush and tumbleweeds

Every time we drive through Wyoming we see some antelope. I don't know if it's the state animal, but it should be.

Bucky is really cute. Too bad he is so destructive. I fed tame deer on an estate in England when I was visiting years ago. What a great experience.

A couple of years ago we were just sure that if we ever saw him we'd shoot him, but then we saw him, and have to admire his determination and work ethic, so now we do what we can to protect the trees we want to keep. And besides we don't know much about guns.

those deer are soooo cute. And I like Bucky too.

We got a really close look at Bucky last night. He's very shy and if he sees us, he slips underwater and lets the current carry him away. But he was oblivious last night, munching away. We couldn't see his teeth, just his eyes and ears. He probably weighs about 70 pounds.
