Columbines

This is a good summer for columbines, both the ones planted around our yard, and the wild ones growing in the woods. This is a typical blue-white columbine and it's the Colorado state flower:

The wild ones look like this:

But I've been out in the middle of the wilderness, on top of a mountain miles from civilization, and there were thousands of the blue and white columbines, huge blossoms blooming in an aspen forest, so the blue and white ones can be wild, too.

I know we would be too hot for them to survive, even in the shade but they are gorgeous.

Wow is that ever a beautiful flower! I didn't know it was the state flower...

The state song is: "Where the Columbines Grow" Sounds kind of corny.

Your state flower is beautiful. I planted some in the shade in CA one year and they were gorgeous!

They are supposed to be a biennial but they re-seed themselves. I've read that after a few years they all revert to yellow, but I've been lucky so far to have a variety of colors over the years.

You bet. The last couple of years they have been showing up in unexpected places around the yard.

I think they are the state flower for other states, mostly western. Did you get a bird of paradise yet?

My mother was trying to get them to grow here the last few years of her life, and all these 24 years later she would be so thrilled with how they've developed.

They are just beautiful and I will look them up. But I am guessing they won't grow down here where the heat is probably not good for them. Lovely name too.

I think you're right - there is such a difference between your climate and mine, but one never knows. Maybe they do really good in your area year-round.
