Retro Decor

I like to look at the house pictures on zillow.com to see what the various homes in my area look like inside.

Here are some from a mid-western state.

This little compartment looks claustrophobic, and seems like it'd be tight to get behind there and clean. Looks like maybe they have ceramic tile on all the little surrounding walls, so there's that, anyway.

I don't know if it's the camera, but I think the cabinets are just a bad color. They don't match the front door, either.

image

It looks like they tried to clean up the place: counter is nicely arranged, but don't you think it would have been nice to clean the cabinet doors and fix the pulls?

image

Sanitized for your protection. They probably do this for foreclosed homes when the water is shut off so nobody tries to use the facilities.

It's a wet bar in a closet. And a built-in bookshelf.

This is why faux finishes went out of style.

How much privacy does one get in that tiny little half walled cubicle?

None. I can't figure out why they put that little wall there, except to make a divider from that hallway along the windows. And what is around that corner to the right? And where does that other door go? It's like a funhouse in there.

I suspect that you are suffering from one of those new-fangled mental illnesses listed in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Ed.

Most likely, but maybe my disease just got reclassified out of that book, and then where would I be? Classified-less.

There was a house here in Las Vegas that was modern architecture in the 1970s and they had furniture bought at that time, and were selling it furnished. It was fun looking at those pictures and remembering back to the day.

Lots of decorating boo-boos there! I love to look at houses, too. In one of my recent house projects I painted over someone else's attempt at sponge painting. It was burgundy and beige, and looked almost like a giraffe print. One of my greatest challenges in painting has to do with matching the many different whites of cabinets, doors, and appliances. It's not easy. But the number one rule of house selling... make it look CLEAN! Obviously, someone missed that memo. As for the toilet, they weatherize it against freezing by adding something, (anti-freeze maybe?) to the pipes. Flushing will wash it all down the drain and you will loose your protection.

One of our bathrooms is sponge painted orange over yellow. Very bright. We can't agree on a new color, and he claims he likes it.

I can't decide if the wall around those shutters used to have paneling on it and it was ripped off. Not that it matters.

The "ceramic tile" in the first picture is actually painted wood paneling. How do I know? It looks just like the painted wood panels in DH's old office.

That makes more sense. No grout to clean, too.

I love houses and my big heart throbs are the Property Brothers.

I think one of my distant cousins is on the crew of that show. His mother was talking about him having a cameo appearance in one of the episodes.

The older I get the less I care what a place looks like!

I'm that way, too, but then I never was much of a decorator.

I like to look at decorating styles and tricks in magazines to get ideas for my spaces, but zillow.com offers a whole new option to my drive-by curiosity.

All of my furniture is hand me downs and thrift shop and auction finds. It will not show up well on Zillow if that day ever comes.

What fun. I'm a house nut. There's a renovation down the street. They added a whole bunch of rooms, one round with great windows, to the front of the house. I don't really know them, but I am going to knock on their door and say "Okay, you can't deny me. I've got to see the inside."

I hope you do that. Sounds like a must-see, and they are probably very proud of it.
