Cowboy Apparel

The Wrangler jeans company used the recent National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas to promote their updated model of jeans designed for competition. When I saw that they are looser, I was concerned that the scenery from the rear wasn't going to be as scenic, if you know what I mean.

I can't explain it as well as this item from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

"The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has served as a coming out party for Wrangler's new cowboy rodeo jeans, officially known as "Competition Jean, Style #01."

The PRCA sanctioned Wrangler's cowboy cut jeans, "13MWZ," as the first official pro rodeo jeans 65 years ago. The 13MWZ, which stands for the jeans' 13th prototype and "Men's Western Zipper," is still worn by some rodeo stars.

Wrangler, which spent 18 months developing the new Competition jeans, rolled out the new PRCA-endorsed product because it was time to give the 1947 jeans a more fashion-forward look while re-calibrating the fit to accommodate an athlete with bigger thighs.

The Competition model has a 21st century look marked by a lower-riding waist, an extra-relaxed seat and thigh and a wider opening at the ankle to fit over boots.

"It has a looser fit, but not too loose," said rodeo superstar Trevor Brazile, of Decatur, Texas, the sport's Michael Jordan who has worn the Competition during the NFR. The ten-day rodeo ends Saturday night.

The Competition also offers a feature not needed in 1947 - a cell phone pocket. The jean, a member of the Wrangler 20X Collection, retails for about $40."

This is a similar model from the Wrangler website, but I don't think they are the competition version:

I am at sea with this discussion. Also rodeo acronyms elude me. The new jeans in the photo look fine. I liked it when casual wear for men was tailored slacks and a sports jacket and no tie. Unless you were out riding on a horse. I am a throwback. Saw a heavy set man wearing jeans bending over (unbelievable) an opera rack at Tower Records. It was the plumber's look if you know what I mean. I was upset I didn't have my camera. I forgave him because I liked his taste in music.

Mr. Troutbend is the type who hangs onto his clothes forever. He doesn't seem to worry much about what is in style.

The view looks just fine from here!

I definitely like the ones that are broken in over those ironed ones with the crease.

I hate low rise jeans because a strip of flesh between the shirt and the
jeans looks horrible. I prefer Levis

I always think of Oklahoma as the true center of the cowboy universe.

We need a comparative fashion show to make a good determination. I agree with Redimpala and Marta.

Need a field trip to Cheyenne during Frontier Days. (It's in July.)

I am just not a fan of the Wranglers... Except for when Brett Favre wore them.
comment by kristilyn3 on Dec 17, 2012 7:51 AM ()
I like Brett Favre a lot, enjoy whatever commercials he's in, but that insurance ad with Aaron Rodgers in it has totally put me off him. I don't even like to hear his name during a game, and all I can think of is that dumb ad - 'the Aaron Rodgers discount double check.' And the silly thing is that what his teammates call it is 'the championship belt' which makes more sense because that's what he was acting out. A guy doing a double check around his waistline area is what I think of when they're making sure their zipper is zipped, and it doesn't look like what Rodgers does in the ad.

I have always worn Wranglers. Lately I get the ones Brett Favre advertises, the loose-fitting type. Very comfortable and they wear for years.

You know, I have no idea what brand Mr. YouKnow buys and what he has the most of. He always goes on what they cost and how they fit, but I'll bet he's got more Wranglers than Levis.

For pure sex appeal and a nice-fitting butt, you can't beat Levis. For some reason, Wrangler has always cornered the rodeo cowboy market though.
comment by redimpala on Dec 17, 2012 2:47 AM ()
That's kind of what I thought, too, that Levis were the thing with the cowboys, and now the rodeo finals are over and they all went home, I have to wait until next year to do my own survey.

I know! I'm ashamed of myself. But cheesecake aside, I think it's interesting that there is a rodeo-sanctioned style of jean that has been around so long and they are finally making the watch pocket larger to accommodate a cell phone, but for the various smart phones, seems like it'd be a big wide pocket.
reply by troutbend on Dec 16, 2012 9:06 PM ()
Well, I'd have to see them walking away from me to know if I like the style, if you know what I mean....
comment by marta on Dec 16, 2012 8:35 PM ()
I do know what you mean. And the fabric broken in better, like that second pair. Look at the waists on those pictures - do you think that's lower riding? The old style must have been under their armpits. But again, we'd have to see someone wearing them.
