The Prodigal Fox

So, after a long 5 day absence, after I had given all the leftover meats and dinner rolls to the mink,

who should show up in the yard this morning, but the fox!

It's like when guests drop in and you feel like there isn't a thing to eat in the house. He had to settle for a Swiss cheese sandwich on double fiber whole grain bread (he like bread) and an egg. I know when he's had enough, because he starts carrying off bits of bread to bury in the yard.

His winter coat is growing in, so he doesn't look as gaunt as he did earlier this summer. He didn't say where he'd been, how long he's going to stay, or where he's going when he leaves here.

He is looking better with his winter coat. He is going to miss you when you leave for Vegas for the winter.

When he goes away for days at a time, I almost wish he wouldn't come back so I wouldn't have to picture him looking in vain for us to come out and say hello.

Beautiful fox! What a neat experience to have one come visit.

It's very interesting to watch him hide food around the yard. He doesn't like the red dog biscuits so he carries them far away to hide them. Sometimes he'll eat one of the beige ones in front of us if we break it in half, but if it's a red one, he waits for both halves to be tossed to him, gets them both in his mouth, and goes off into the woods.

A lot of other people may be giving him handouts too, or it could be a foxy lady.

I hope he's found a girl friend somewhere, and that he doesn't have to cross the highway to get to where she is. I always worry about that, and remember all the times I've been driving the highway at night and a fox ran across the road in front of me, and all the times I've seen dead ones on the highways. Today while he was eating a piece of buttermilk pie I told him that I hoped he was being careful.

Before you come back in the Spring he is going to erect a huge banner welcoming you back. In small print it will say, "How about some more sandwiches?"

I can picture that. He will earn his summer food by controlling the voles and other rodents over the winter.

I worry that your feeding these guys regularly will cause the bears to think your place is a grocery store. Please be careful!

Worse yet, raccoons! At least the bears hibernate.

He's the best kind of guest, doesn't complain, takes what you have.

He's a picky eater. If I put out lettuce and vegetable scraps mixed with some meat scraps he sets aside the vegetables, and then later some animal (and I wonder if it is him in a less picky mood) comes and cleans up the lettuce. None of them likes celery unless it's got canned catfood dumped on it.

I am glad he stopped by for a visit... he's so cute. I like that you are helping him out... I just hope he knows where to get food when you go!

I worry about that, too, but I'm hoping that he's living on his own when he's not coming here, several days at a time. I saw him stalking some rodents on the edge of the lawn this afternoon, so that's good. I haven't seen a ground squirrel in several weeks, so maybe he's killed them all. (Hooray!)
