Pod Zilla

The neighbor across the street has let his house go into foreclosure and is moving to Hawaii. He's been having garage sales every weekend since late November and a thrift store hauled away the last of the stuff that didn't sell.

Even with that, he's got a garage full of boxes to be moved via one of those PODS (Portable On Demand Storage) containers via slow boat to Maui. I look across the street at that container and picture it on a truck or maybe even a train to the Port of Long Beach, California where it will be loaded onto a container ship and bob across the ocean to paradise.

Yesterday it was delivered to his house by Pod-Zilla.

Looking at the truck and the solitary driver you wonder how he's going to get that thing where they want it.

First, the driver chains the container to the frame and drives the truck out from under it.

He lowers it down some so it's not so dangly, and uses hand controls to guide it into position.

Lowers it down to the ground, removes the chains, and raises the back frame so it'll clear the roof.

Backs the truck under it.

Ready to go after the paperwork is signed.

PodZilla!

Wonder what it costs? Arm and leg, I bet. And I could just see you sitting there taking pictures of the whole operation!

By lying flat on my stomach, ear to the glass in the upstairs bedroom I couldn't help but see all this activity in the street out front. At the time I was snapping some photos of the cat and my geraniums in bloom and these shots of what the neighbors are up to accidentally got captured in the background. I cropped out the cat for purposes of clarity.

I've heard of Pods, but didn't know they had such a neat
way to load/unload.

Me neither. I hadn't given it a lot of thought, but I would have guessed they were winched off a truck like Larry said he used to do. This motorized frame is really something.

I seen them advertised a lot, but it's neat the way the delivery works. I'd love to move slowly, in stages, if I have to move. Moving is one of my least favorite things ever.

When Mr. YouKnow dies and I have to do something with this house, I'm donating it plus contents to the Pinball Museum here in town because I would never be able to move by myself.

I wish that we could have had one moving and loaded it gradually. I never
again want to move.

It's such hard work. The neighbors were up past midnight putting stuff in it, and back again at 6 am. Maybe it's being picked up on Monday.

The ones we used to use the bed tilted and touched the ground, hooked a cable to the box and winched it on.

Here ya' go, folks. Screech, screech (that's the container sliding down the bed), Clunk! (dust settles).

Hi, back again. I have shown my husband the pictures, he says we have not got anything like it here. He thinks that when the firm come back to remove the loaded container, it may well be a larger vehicle that takes it away (it will be heavier). It is still possible that it will be lifted back onto the trailer with the same appliance that dropped it off, as it apparently has a pretty high 'lift' on it.
I hope you are their to take some more photos of the removal - I enjoy looking at that stuff

I'm not leaving the house until it's picked up , or at least that's the plan, camera ready. They've been working to fill it so frantically I'm thinking the pickup must be on Monday.

I've seen at least one around here. So is your neighbor going to be able to afford Hawaii more easily than Vegas?
comment by tealstar on Feb 5, 2011 4:11 PM ()
They have family in Hawaii, so that helps. I've been trying to work all this out with my scant knowledge. I could swear this is not the same wife he had a couple of years ago, so I decided he's letting his first and second mortgages (jointly held by him and wife no. 1) be foreclosed on (I looked at the county records) and his credit will be shot, but the new rent/mortgage/utilities can be in the new wife's name using her credit report so they can start clean.

I love those moments when we get it wrong and then figure it out and have a laugh at ourselves.

I'm thinking stash pod. A place to store all my lovely yarn.

A person could have a little private studio out there, go visit the stash, stay for some tea.
reply by troutbend on Feb 6, 2011 10:29 AM ()
That is so cool!

It'd make a nice second home or clubhouse out on the driveway or beside the house.

A great idea that somebody had, I'm sorry that it wasn't me.

I thought you made that name up!
comment by kristilyn3 on Feb 5, 2011 9:55 AM ()
I know! I couldn't believe it when I noticed it on the side of the truck bed.
reply by troutbend on Feb 5, 2011 1:24 PM ()
I don't think I have ever seen one of these container lifters before - I will get my old man to have a look (he is engrossed with the '6 Nations Rugby International' on tv at the moment). He was a truck driver - still is, but he is a 'carer' for me at present.
It is an impressive piece of kit though

comment by augusta on Feb 5, 2011 9:11 AM ()
I hope we're here when they pick it up all loaded. Amazing that four chains hooked to the lower edges are enough to support the weight.
