Oops. Dropped the Remote

Sitting here, watching a DVD, I dropped the remote control in a large mug of hot tea. Judging by how much came out of it, it soaked up a lot of liquid in the short time it was in there.

Mr. Troutbend, in his typical electronic avoidance, tried to stand on the edge of the room so I might not involve him in helping to dry it out. But I shamed him into it, and he found a little screwdriver and opened it up. Finally, he got the hair dryer and dried it out. I think it's working now. At least I was able to get the input back to the cable box from the DVD. Whew! Dodged a bullet there.

Yesterday I found an electric tea kettle just like the one I recently bought for my other house. It was stuck 'way back on the shelf behind three other models that I didn't like as well. One of them cost $79.99 (allegedly marked down from $160.00). It had a digital read-out, and an infinite number of heat settings. How fancy do you have to be to get some boiled water for tea? It's not like we are running a chemistry lab here.

Of course, true tea drinkers know that black tea should be brewed in hotter water than green tea. Oh? You didn't know that? Neither did I until just now. I don't care that much, I'm just glad this one shuts off automatically when the water is boiling and the carafe is glass so I can see when it's time to de-lime it with some white vinegar.

Mr. Trout was sweet to come to the rescue even though he was inclined to hide. My dear friend Bella, now gone, gave me a stainless whistling tea kettle when she was visiting. I don't drink a lot of tea, so don't use it much. One coffee for me every morning keeps me sane. Sometimes it whistles and I don't recognize the sound and wonder "what is that?"

I used that burner on my stove so much for heating water it appears to have just one setting now - high. I want a new stove so am waiting for a good excuse to replace it.

I usually heat my tea water in the microwave. I alternate between black, green, herbal, and Constant Comment tea. No coffee for this girl, although I have always been around coffee drinkers.

Constant Comment is one of my all-time favorites.

The reason I decided I wanted an electric tea kettle was one of the casinos in Laughlin, NV (a 90 mile drive) was giving them away, but I was darned if I was going down there just for that. I finally bought one for my place in Colorado and liked it so much, I got this one for here. But up until then, I was using the microwave.

Wow! This little post generated quite a few replies! I rank the remote control very high on my list of most valuable inventions. Yes, I have one!

The scary part was that particular TV could not be configured without its remote. Some of our other ones have buttons that can do it in a pinch.

Went to Staples. On a kiosk in the front aisle they sell Brookstone stuff. I saw a pillow that is actually a universal remote!

So, what now? You put your head on it, and your nose can increase the volume, and your ear changes the channel? I'll look it up. Biggest advantage: too large to fit into a large mug of tea.

I loved this post!

I still remember that YouTube you did about why do people have to take the whole family grocery shopping because whenever I go to Walmart I see what you mean.

My tea kettle is heated by a stove burner and whistles.

A couple of times I left the whistler off my kettle and cooked it dry when I got distracted by the fox or going to look at the fish in the river. I totally melted one tea kettle, and it left a puddle of melted enamel on my stove.

You have just reminded me that I need to go to Tuesday morning. sometimes
I wonder about the alleged prices.

There was an older lady in Tues Morning looking for a good buy on a suitcase, but they were all $69 and up. I told her Ross and TJ Maxx often have better deals than Tuesday Morning in their linens and housewares departments, it's always worth the time to check there first. But sometimes Tues Morning is the only place for small appliances or you can find some decent closeouts.

Hairdryers are just the thing for drying out our remotes and cell phones, which are magnetically drawn to glasses of liquid. From other people's sad stories I've found out that the first thing NOT to do is turn the item on or off or anything, until it's completely dry.

Fortunately, the Mister was here to intervene and keep me from blowing it up. Do you ever do something stupid like that and make a little deal with the victim (remote, misplaced keys) that you will from now on be very mindful, and it'll never happen again? I try, and sometimes I succeed.

I was going to make a comment but now I need to get myself a large mug of hot tea.

You probably already have an electric tea kettle. I really like them, it just took awhile to get there.

Luckily, if it doesn't work right anymore, you can buy a universal remote for not too much money.

Fingers crossed that it'll be okay.

I like my espresso machine. Put in the water, screw on the lid, put the coffee in the little holder and press it tight, stick the holder in the machine, push the ON button. First thing in the morning is when I push the ON button as I did all the rest last night. In the morning, the first parts are far to much to remember.

Now we have a coffee maker, an espresso machine (not a fancy one), and the electric tea kettle, something for any situation.

You are probably too young to remember when you had to get up and go to the radio to change the dial--you have heard of radios haven't you? OMG! Today's radios have remotes!!!

They have remotes now??? No way! Seriously, I didn't know that. Living in the dark ages here.

I did not know about the temp differences for green and black tea... I don't drink black tea tho. very glad the remote seems to be doing ok!
comment by kristilyn3 on Nov 30, 2011 6:44 PM ()
Whew! I'm glad it's okay (or seems to be). High priority item around here.
