What's That Noise?

It was very windy here this afternoon, blowing in some weather. After dark, I kept hearing something and wondered it that was the wind. But no, it is rain falling hard and steady. No thunder or lightning, just rain.

Last summer we got a metal roof on our house, and this is the first time it has rained hard on it because last summer was so dry. It's not pounding loud, and we've got roof insulation and all that, but it sounds different from the rain on the wood shakes that we had before.

I moved the car out of the garage so the rain can rinse it off.

It's very exciting to get some moisture here.

For the three years I was in law school, we lived with my in-laws. Their roof leaked like Snuffy Smith's shack in the old comics and we had to run around putting containers down to catch the drips. To this day, rain makes me nervous about the prospect of leaks, even tho' we have a solid metal roof.

Good old Snuffy and Elviney. If it rained at the Four Corners, my Uncle Robert at Ismay Trading Post would probably have roof problems just like that.

Love the sound of rainfall,
in the metal eave outside my window,
the water rush down the gutter,
drops galore hitting my umbrella,
joyful splashings on the pond,
the leaves rapt with wet bliss,
my heart singing....

Next time it rains, I'm going out there and think of your lovely words.

We've had a metal roof for 7 or 8 years and 20 inches of isolation in the attic. I don't find the additional noise particularly annoying, but I don't like hearing too much heavy rain because of the water table that rises in the basement. I looked at the drought monitor a few days ago and even the areas in the deepest red are smaller than they had been, so maybe nature has taken a turn for the better!

Our spring snows turned some things around for us, but we've still got some drought problems here in Colorado. It's been really, really bad in Nevada and California.

I am happy for you. We are both desperate for lots more of the rain.

We had one day of rain this past week--now back to dry--and the humidity is beginning to sneak back!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 14, 2013 9:51 AM ()
Our humidity runs about 25%.

I love the rain -- I mostly hear it on the exhaust fan in the kitchen. If it is light out, I love to watch it falling on the water. Glad you got some relief. Should help the brook.

It used to gurgle in the gutters but doesn't do that any more.
