Meteor Strike

Watching the videos of the meteor strike in Russia is a surreal experience, something from science fiction.

Those poor people must have thought it was an atom bomb; it's 4 degrees (F) below zero there, and all those broken windows.

Reports say the roof on a zinc factory collapsed. It didn't occur to me that there is a risk of radioactive exposure from that, but after all the reassurances that no radioactivity has escaped, I wonder just what goes on inside Russian zinc factories.

The thing about stuff falling to earth from space is that it could hit anywhere, so get out your Henny Penny early warning system.

And what about the poor folks who were on that Carnival cruise? Lawsuits coming: claims of emotional distress and PTSD. And not just the passengers claiming it, the families on shore are talking about how frantic and distress they were about the plight of their loved ones.

Lawsuits????? While it was a terrible experience for sure, lawsuits are a bit over the top. I am so sick of this mentality running rampant throughout society. Grr.

Folks can't just shrug it off any more, they have to look for money from someone. Our country's leaders are so greedy and money hungry, they don't set a good example.

The residents of a meteor were terrified at the sight of approaching Chelyabinsk. (Russian Radio Joke)

I finally got it! That's a good joke.

saw this and have been following the news on this. Then there was a streak in CA I believe but not sure.Have you heard about this?

What a coincidence to have three different things going on within the space of a couple of days.

I had NPR on at 6am. Wearing earbuds so I didn't wake Donna. Geez... they played the audio from the popular video and it was LOUD! I heard that 1000 people were injured by glass from broken vodka bottles, but that is probably not a reliable report (jondude on fb).

Love the thing about the vodka bottles, was going to say it was a bit early in the day, but maybe to some folks, it was more like late in the previous night.

Meteor strikes in settled areas have been so rare that when it happens, we are terrified it is something more, like a missile strike and we are at war or something.

Oh, definitely, we'd think it was something man-made first.

That's why I spend my time in restaurants--meteorites know better!!! They are showing new images right now on ABC news!

Worst case: killed by a meteor strike while eating in a crummy restaurant.

All those disasters! You can't plan life, you just have to go with the
flow and do your best. I would be so mad if I had been on that ship and
my kids would be frantic.

The Sewer of the Seas. I haven't seen any interviews with older people who were on that ship, sounds like it was more a spring break sailing.

The Russian guy whose voice is apparently describing the meteor breaking up never seems to get very excited about it! His day job must be describing the action at a chess tournament.

He did sound calm. Think they're used to seeing UFOs and hearing sonic booms?
reply by troutbend on Feb 16, 2013 6:20 PM ()
Surreal is the word! I feel for all of them.

War of the Worlds or something.
