Letting Go

Last week I decided to shut off the phone in our smaller cabin. We don't have enough rental business there to make it worth paying the $17 a month to keep a phone year-round on vacation hold, and then activate it for three months at $35 a month. Up until this year there was no cell phone coverage here, but lately Verizon and ATT customers have been able to get limited signals, so that's what I'm telling people. Besides, many of the people who rent from us claim they are glad to get away from phones and computers.

Then, this week I've decided to stop leasing the big 250 gallon propane tank over there. It costs $48 a year, and the cabin is only open during the hot season, so people probably don't use the heater at all. If the situation ever changes, we can buy or rent a smaller propane tank, or put in some electric space heaters.

This spring, we thought we could put a Vacancy sign out on the highway and get drop-in business that way, but we haven't worked up to it because we'd get a lot of traffic coming down here, just looky-loos curious about what is down at the end of our driveway. And our other cabin was so busy this year, we didn't feel the need.

These decisions sound easy, but it's a little bit of a wrench to let go and admit this cabin will never be busy enough to pay its own way. We do get a little bit of income from it, mostly fishermen who want a basic bed for the night, and it's perfect for that. We don't pay extra for the satellite TV, so no need to cancel it to save money.

Hey! Ya'll getting rain? I see on the news Vegas is getting flash floods. We got a little rain for about an hour yesterday afternoon

We have been getting small storms every day, but it's tapering off now. Yesterday it clouded up, and barely sprinkled, but the clouds alone cooled things down. We're set up to water the grass, but it doesn't come close to getting around the edges like a good rainstorm does.

Wow! A wonderful retreat, fishing or not.

I keep saying I'm going to go spend a night over there, but never do. One of these days!

That cabin looks charming.

It really is a sweet place. I think I'll spend the night this month just to get a feel for it again. The best part is the front porch.

The red cabin is attractive and basic but you are right. There is no need
to heat it or furnish phone service.

I wanted it to have as much of everything that it could, so it was a hard realization to decide it doesn't need all that.

It really is very pretty.

The back kitchen window opens out onto a grassy slope, and I would love to establish some wildflowers out there.

It looks like a lovely little cabin, but not big enough for a family, I'm sure. I think you were right in eliminating the phone and heat. A small portable heater would be plenty on cool summer days....and I never worry about a phone, especially if I can get cell service.

It really is just right for two people, but I don't want to market it as a honeymoon cottage because it'd be competing with places in town that have hot tubs.

Sounds like a smart plan. This way it's still rentable when needed. It's really quite lovely.

I wish I'd decided all this sooner.

I would love to live in that red cabin. I like my place, and it's pretty secluded, but not as pretty as "the little red cabin."

I've thought about moving my Uncle Robert in there, but he would not leave his hoarder's paradise that he's lived in all his life.

Awe. Maybe it can be Quackers suite.
comment by kristilyn3 on July 30, 2012 5:03 PM ()
Quackers doesn't like it over there. We go there with him after a dip in the river, but after a few minutes he wants to come home, and runs about as fast as we can walk to get there.

I think it's pretty cute and if I'm going rustic, that is just fine. Since you are not renting during the cold season, it makes sense not to pay for heating.
comment by tealstar on July 30, 2012 5:02 PM ()
It's the first thing people see as they come down the driveway, so it's a sort of ambassador.

I bet I would bang my head on the shelf on the wall!!!

Is that the smaller cabin in the top picture?
comment by greatmartin on July 30, 2012 4:49 PM ()
More likely you'd bang your shoulder, but it's up pretty high. Yes, that's it in the picture.

How do you manage to keep a phone in a rental? Nobody uses long distance or is it $35 for just local and credit card calls. I looked into in-room phones when I bought the AppleTree Inn and Efficiencies in the '90s and a phone system would have cost me a few thousand.
comment by jjoohhnn on July 30, 2012 4:10 PM ()
It doesn't have long distance, so they'd have to use a calling card. One time someone guest signed up for some pay email or something on the Internet while they were staying here and gave the phone number of the rental. This caused a monthly charge on the phone bill that I didn't realize was there for a few months, but I was able to get the phone company to remove it. That could happen again any time.
