Kitchen Decor

Okay, the other day I told you all about how I want a new kitchen sink. From that, you can see that I won't be picking out new appliances any time soon.

Good thing, because - guess what - stainless steel for appliances is out of style now. The Wall Street Journal says it's out because kitchen decor trends have a 15-year life. And the Wall Street Journal surely knows a lot about kitchens.

If you've watched very many of those sell your home programs on HGTV, you know that you shouldn't even list your house without stainless steel appliances.

What color, then, you might ask? Not Harvest Gold or Avocado Green, they tell us.

The latest thing will be something like GE's Slate Appliances. "Slate: a color that is just as stylish and sophisticated as stainless steel but with a strong, earthy feel."

It looks a lot like stainless steel to me, or maybe just gray.

Oh, blah. I've been in a dither about what color appliances to buy for a long time. Now I have one more choice to deliberate on? Good thing I don't plan on listing this house. "Almond" is starting to look real good to me right now.

I know! All I can hear in my head is those HGTV 'sell this house' shows where they do this little check list and say that granite and stainless appliances are a must. I'll probably never have either one.

When I heard that stainless steel showed fingerprints, that was it for me. Although I have so many things on my fridge held on with magnets, it probably wouldn't matter. There is no room for fingerprints.

Same here. I think over the years they might have remedied that somewhat, but I'm not sure.

Women dressed like they are going out to dance, cooking in the kitchen. LOL
comment by jondude on Sept 26, 2012 6:56 PM ()
I think she has the dance invitation in her hand, and is just telling him she doesn't have time to eat, go ahead without her. And don't forget to feed the dog.

I have a black and white kitchen and love it. I have black and a white
Fridge that you helped me pick out. I will go either color for appliances
but no trendy colors for me. I learned my lesson years ago about avocado
green and harvest gold.

Next year I'm getting a new stove. I'd like to get gas, will have to talk to the plumber about whether he can do the piping for it.

Here's a picture (and article) of your slate appliance filled kitchen above but without the people in it. The Business Wire article from a couple of weeks ago stated that Stainless is still a top choice with 35% of remodels/new purchasers choosing this option. I still like hte stainless but think the slate would work well if it the cabinetry is designed around it. I don't think the finish on the cabinets in the kitchen photo above is a good match for the slate look, imo.

I'm going to read the article to see what the rest of the kitchen remodelers are choosing. We've been brainwashed to feel guilty if we didn't buy stainless even though we didn't want it.

I like slate and it is different than stainless but I like Stainless too, especially because it is so easy to take care of and it is so durable.
comment by whereabouts on Sept 26, 2012 9:58 AM ()
I want to see the slate in person. I have a feeling it's just really stainless with a duller finish, maybe textured.

Most of us like a kitchen that has some shiny stuff so it shows it when it's been cleaned. ...My sister's new house was just completed, and the kitchen sink surprised me. It is not metal, but some weird hard surface that isn't even slick or smooth like the ceramic finishes we're used to. I'd rather have the old kinds.
comment by drmaus on Sept 26, 2012 9:09 AM ()
That sink material sounds interesting because it seems like a slick surface would keep microscopic whatever from getting into the pores of the surface.

That does look like stainless steel! Interesting. So that is your current kitchen up top???? You should see if HGTV is giving away any kitchen remodels!
comment by kristilyn3 on Sept 26, 2012 6:44 AM ()
NOOOO! That's not my kitchen, just something I found on the Internet for those who have never seen that color.

Avocado kitchens are very 1950s--maybe a time for their return--I like stainless steel kitchens!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Sept 25, 2012 3:59 PM ()
Even the retro look appliances don't come in avocado green, I don't know if it'll ever come back.

Recently dishwasher and refrigerator died in the same week. We replaced with top-of-the line GE in stainless. I am happy as a clam. They are super efficient and the stainless looks fantastic, a pleasure to look at. Meanwhile, last house (it was next door) had ORANGE porcelain. This house has Harvest gold and the cabinet trim is avocado green. The trouble with custom colors is that getting them repaired/replaced 20 years later is a lost cause.

I'm glad I was never one for those trendy colors, unless almond counts.
reply by troutbend on Sept 25, 2012 5:22 PM ()
Look,I am very happy with my kitchen.I do not need all the frills that they have out there.
We loved it and so let it be it.When things failed or die then will get a new one.
What is all the hoopla about getting a new kitchen.Enjoy what you have. The kitchen is to cook and bake that is all I care. Now let me see what is next.(kididng

My sink is all scratched up and hard to clean, it's almost 40 years old.
reply by troutbend on Sept 25, 2012 5:17 PM ()
Except Fredo for woodwork that is rotting and falling. That is hard to clean and looks just awful. When we can, we'll have our cabinets replaced.
reply by tealstar on Sept 25, 2012 3:50 PM ()
I never liked the stainless steel and I don't care for the slate. I have a small kitchen so I'm sticking with white.
comment by nittineedles on Sept 25, 2012 1:11 PM ()
My appliances don't match because I bought my dishwasher used from a co-worker, but I never even think about it. I suppose it looks funny to guests. At least I don't have stainless. Hah!

We recently took a load of crapola to the dump/landfill. No sooner did we get there than we spotted a pink sink! Our first house! we both thought at once.
comment by steve on Sept 25, 2012 11:59 AM ()
I can picture that sink with lovely pink tile and a green accent.
