Kayaking the Rio Grande

At the end of this month I am flying down to Laredo, Texas for a family wedding.

I have mixed feelings about it, after briefly glimpsing a few minutes of that TV show: "Bordertown Laredo" about cops fighting the war against drugs on the United States side of the border. I couldn't really stand to watch that show because I couldn't tell the cops from the crooks, and have a feeling the line is very blurry.

I asked the mother of the bride about safety, and she said that a year ago the drug cartels in Nuevo Laredo, right across the river via international bridge from where we're staying and the wedding will be held, were shooting random people, 'but not Americans.' And supposedly they're not doing that any more.

These are the cousins I went rafting with on the Arkansas River this past summer. The bride-to-be is on the left side grinning big. Her groom is the first one on the right side.

Today the bride sent out an email describing things to do in Laredo while we are there. These include a walking tour of the old downtown and kayaking on the Rio Grande. But then I looked at the website for the company that conducts the guided kayak tours on the Rio Grande.

Is it reassuring that they feature a picture of the Border Patrol? Not to me.

The kayaks themselves look pretty stable.

The way I left it was that if my cousin Cathy, who is my age, is going kayaking, I will too.

Here's the website in case you want to arrange a Rio Grande kayak trip:

I would love to go kayaking one day. It looks like such a fun water sport.

That 2 hour rafting trip I went on last August was so much fun, I'd like to do more river floating.

Egad. There's a lot to be said for not going outside..

Sorry this took so long: it was definitely not the sort of river I would want to kayak in - mybloggers looking brown, stinky. The hotel was on a plaza between the two bridges to Mexico, so I was at the gateway to whichever, kind of like having an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, except I'm not sure the US is an angel. I would go back to Laredo for the food, but that's not a very compelling reason to go.

Kayaking and paddlesports are increasing in popularity. Since you did not get to pick the 'where', put it out of your mind and just enjoy it- and wear a life jacket!

I think I'll do my kayaking in Colorado - far from the drug wars.

Relax, the Mexican food will be outstanding and you might want to bring
a quart of salsa home with you. Stay off the Rio Grande.

Well, okay. I'll relax.

I'm impressed that you're up to such an activity. I wish I were. It's probably fine. If you're very worried you can try checking on any recent incidents in local papers.

I looked - there was a story about finding a corpse along the river somewhere in that area.

My daughter was sent to El Paso, TX for a week for her job. Her hotel was across the street from the border fence separating the US from Juarez, the murder capital of Mexico. She could see the border patrols. It is a scary time we are living in.

I hope most of it's over there at El Paso next weekend.

I agree with Marg. I would want a kevlar vest and a military helmet before I got anywhere near the Rio Grande at that location.

My cousins will be spending a lot of time in church that weekend. I'll just tag along.

You are living life in the fast lane. Maybe your wedding gift should be body armor. Come visit Ed and me in Florida -- we can go kayaking without danger of being picked off from the Mexican side. Didn't you write a post about that Arlamsas river trip where you vented a wee bit?

It's those same people that I wrote about before. I go to their events for the same reason crowds gather around train wrecks.

Don't forget to take your Kevlar vest.
