Do You like Herbs?

Well, Herb likes yours!

This is a hydroponic garden I decided to try this year. It has been so nice to have fresh herbs for cooking. It came with three kinds of basil, thyme, oregano, mint, and dill.

We don't have a perfect spot for it, so it's on top of the clothes dryer. I'm going to take it to Las Vegas, where there is more room for it.

My favorite is that basil there on the right. It has produced a lot, and I've trimmed it back several times. Second favorite is the dill. The next batch I grow will me more of that basil, dill, cilantro, and parsley.

In the style of Greatmartin, I'm also growing a sweet potato in a cup of water.

love basil -- the aroma is hypnotic. It's a Greek, thing, I think. Anyway, my mom grew it and called it vasiliko.

After my experience with fresh basil, I don't see how dried basil compares. I won't stop using the dried here and there, but I won't think of them as interchangeable.

I had one of these, tried tomatoes and failed miserably. I just have no talent for plants!!!

I didn't like the looks of growing tomatoes in it, and don't think I would do lettuce, either. And certainly not petunias!

Wow, they look so healthy! Is growing things hydroponically easier? We used to grow herbs in the garden and hope to do so again. It's so nice to be able to go outside and pick what you need. One of the houses we fixed up still had the original sage and chives I had planted when we lived there.

They are certainly easier to grow hydroponically up here in the mountains because our weather isn't always the best for gardens. And they really grow big. I've gotten a lot of harvests out of that basil.

Your plants look like they are happy growing in your laundry room. Very lush.

Those grow lights - I hate to think what they have done to the electric bill. The company sells grow light enhancers that are foil panels that go around the back and keep the light in. I'm going to make some soon.

oooo I am jealous once again!

I think you'd really enjoy something like this for your veggie meals.

And the aroma!!

How cool is that!! The ultimate hydroponic garden, of course, is in the wonderful movie "Leaves of Grass" with Ed Norton doing a superb job as twin brothers. I just watched it again yesterday and highly recommend it.

I'll be sure to watch it. Thanks for the tip.

I love having fresh herbs and yours are so pretty. Mine are out in the
dirt so won't survive the winter.

I want to see what I can do about planting some outside in Las Vegas and see how they do. The dirt there is sterile and like concrete, so people just make raised beds.

So THAT'S where my Tupperware mug went!

Yup. Try and get it back.

Yes--in fact I have a few herbs growing outside on the walkway!

I'm going to have to post a picture of the avocado I grew from seed--planted it in the ground and it is starting to grow nicely!

My poor little sweet potato seems to be struggling - it reached the number of leaves you see there, and then stopped growing. I gave it a tiny bit of liquid plant food, and one of the leaves died.

We still have basil growing in a pot on the windowsill in the kitchen. Looks like if will continue right into the winter. Some other lemony thing we bought at the same time with very small leaves looks like an annual. but it is nice to have something fresh from the plant to add to salad.

It sounds like lemon thyme. We have a big patch of thyme out by the other house that has spread out and is doing well year after year.
