The Fox and Magpies

When I got up early this morning, the fox was out front finishing off a bird, and two magpies were harassing him, waiting for any scraps. He ignores them, just like he ignored the goose.

For the record, here's how his coat looks today. The dark part is the beginning of his outer winter coat. It looks coarser than around his shoulders where the fur looks so soft.

He's beautiful! How great to be able to observe nature from your porch!

This fox has been coming around for the past three years - he is incredibly tame, and I don't know where he learned that, but it has been a real treat.

Did you have any trouble posting the pictures? I can't post any pics at all.
WOW! Just look at that tail. Beautiful! I'll bet he was hoping those big, fat, juicy magpies would come a little closer.

You could tell he was irritated with them, but then they all came out back and shared some cat food.

I have never seen magpies. They are quite large, aren't they? What bird was Mr Fox eating? A chicken from you or a wild one?

Magpies are a little bit bigger than a pigeon and have that long tail. They have a distinctive call. He was eating one of these little gray birds that show up in the fall. They must be pretty dumb because I've seen evidence that at least three of them have been eaten lately.

Is the fox panting in the bottom picture? It must not be cold there yet.
comment by elderjane on Sept 22, 2012 1:58 PM ()
No, not panting, I think the picture caught him just after licking his chops.

I just love your pictures of the fox. How lucky you are to have him visit. We used to have two that visited our feeder at night but on fall we had major rains and their dens flooded so they moved on. I saw my first magpie when I was in Idaho several years ago....we do not have them in Georgia. They are beautiful birds.

We don't have magpies here very often, and I don't know what brought them at this time. They seem to know that the fox isn't a threat to them.

he is so cute. I haven't seen a magpie either, so thanks for the pics!

The magpie nests are big messy things. They are supposed to be really smart, and steal shiny things.

Great photos! I always wondered what a magpie looked like!

Around here they are usually along the highways looking for roadkill.

I love blue jays--I am glad fox leaves them alone!!!
comment by greatmartin on Sept 22, 2012 9:21 AM ()
A magpie is twice as large as a blue jay (Stellars Jay). I think the fox would eat a blue jay if he had a chance.
