Hello from the Fox

It has been a different year with the fox, this is his third year with us. He'll come by, and then we won't see him for a week or ten days.

Lately, he'll skip a few days, but when he shows up, camps out in the yard for about an hour, making us dig deep for something to toss to him. I ran out of the dinner rolls I made just for him, so am making some more right now.

We've been catching a mouse or two a night in the live trap, and finally the fox was here one morning when there were two mice from next door. Mr. Troutbend let them out one at a time, and the fox caught them easily. He killed them quickly (they don't play like a cat does) and left the corpses for later pickup.

After the second mouse, the fox came trotting back to us with such an expectant look on his face, we were sorry we didn't have more mice for him. This is better than watching to see if the fish catch them when we put them in the river. So far this year, we have caught more than 40 mice in this house alone, and haven't even gotten to the garage.

I had a couple of cheese garlic biscuits I'd been saving for him. He ate one, and then had the other in his mouth to take to the family, but he couldn't hold onto it and pick up a mouse at the same time. He struggled with it, and finally left with only the biscuit, so he could come back for the mice later.

You can see how his coat is thinning for summer.

Ed adopted, after some resistance (it was a commitment thing)my two cats, Scratch and Sniff. Scratch, white w/yellow eyes, really bonded to him and he turned to mush. But he loved them both and we took really good care of them. Losing them was really hard. I think Mr. T is having trouble with his grief. It took us a year to get Brunswick, when we lost Scratch, who was only nine but very sick with diabetes and pancreatitis. Sniff was hostile for a while but then they got cozy and Sniff even groomed Brunswick the way he used to groom Scratch. Brunswick, unlike Scratch, never groomed back -- I think he was alone too much as a kitten.

I think he's coming around. Some of it is that he always ends up with litter box duty, so he's probably enjoying the break.

awwww, you're soooo lucky to have visits from this beautiful critter!! I love them but they are considered vermin here in Australia and they are getting slaughtered and it upsets me so much.

We're lucky to not have any neighbors to complain.

Is the other fox still coming around once in a while too?
comment by boots586 on June 3, 2012 3:45 PM ()
Yes, it's still coming around - after dark. I toss three dog biscuits out there every night, and they are gone a little bit later when I check on them.

This is one fun fox. Looks like he's adopted you. How is the kitty project going? When you choose one, be sure he can travel. The two tuxedo types I've had didn't travel well. The tabbies did better.

We haven't discussed getting new cats - it's a taboo subject around here. I said something about how nice it is to be able to put a jigsaw puzzle together in peace, and could tell we're not going to sit around and laugh about the good old times with Buddy. I'll bring up getting new cats sometime this summer, have thought about just doing it on my own, but it's probably nicer to let him participate since at least one of them is going to attach to him.

verah cool pics, Troutie. there is a neighborhood couple who visit here and they have a fox who visits them. they collect scraps from the lunch room for him/her. I have contributed many a meatloaf slice and cabbage burger to the cause.

It's interesting to see what foxes will and won't eat. I thought he'd eat just about anything, but he is not a big fan of vegetables unless they are mixed in with other food, and he has no use for strawberries but likes grapes. And he loves, loves pasta but it has to have some kind of sauce.

You can never ever lecture me about spoiling Rex!! The fox is just as
spoiled. It is incredible to have that bond with a wild creature.

He has gotten so much pickier this summer. I think it was the dinner rolls that did it.

If a fox lived in Brooklyn, would it like bagels?
comment by jondude on June 2, 2012 8:08 PM ()
Yes, it'd be holding out for kosher food.

Fascinating!!!

It is such a privilege to be able to interact with this creature, and I'm so thankful for the opportunity.

I heard today about some research that was done to see if foxes can be domesticated, like dogs were originally. In six generations (about 2-3 years), they were not pets but were acceptably not so wild. Keep up your fox training regimen. You should tell the scientists about the dinner roll project.

I work really hard to not worry about whether he will come back when I don't see him for awhile. I know every day he visits could be the last because he doesn't live around here close. At least I don't think he crosses the busy highway to get here.

If I come to your backyard can I get a biscuit WITHOUT the mouse?
He is really a sleek looking guy--wonder if he has a new family yet?
comment by greatmartin on June 2, 2012 6:32 PM ()
Yes, you'd get the fresh out of the oven. He's changed the directions he goes, so I think the family has grown enough to be able to move to a different location. Gee! I'd sure like to see them one of these years, and I'd like to think there would be future generations, although they probably won't be as friendly.

Mice tartare, cheese and garlic biscuits — no wonder he loves you....

I'm afraid he's spoiled, and we can't go back. The other day I fed him a peanut butter sandwich and he ate the filling first.

Such a handsome fellow!

I found one little tuft of fur that he shed in the yard. It's so very soft.

Mmmmm Cheese garlic biscuits, fresh baked dinner rolls. How come the fox is getting all the good stuff?
I made some banana/walnut/oatmeal muffins this morning. That's my Susie Homemaker stint for this week.
comment by nittineedles on June 2, 2012 5:32 PM ()
Mr. Troutbend asks the same question - why does the fox get all the good stuff? He (the fox) has been scorning the Milkbone dog biscuits, so I've been having to come up with ideas. Sometimes it looks like when he has young ones to feed, he hangs around until I give him something they would like, usually a soft baked item like a dinner roll.
