What's Happening Here

After an unusually long snowmelt season this year we are finally seeing the high water in the Big Thompson River go down to fishing level. It was fishable yesterday, but dropped some more overnight to just about perfection.

A couple of fishermen from the fishing club came up yesterday to fish and stayed overnight at our Brown Palace cabin so they can fish some more today. After a month of resting, our fish are hungry and easy to catch. Here's a paraphrase: "Fish are jumpin' and the water is high."

Mr. Troutbend's cousins are coming this afternoon to stay at the Brown Palace for three nights. They come every year and there will be a hike on our property and some helping with heavy lifting projects. This is Mr. Tbend's cousin Mike with whom he gets along better than his own brother.

Our hummingbirds are here in force and when you open the back door it's a cacophony of shrillness. Male broadtail hummers make a distinctive noise when they fly, the result of air rushing through special feathers on their wings. Since they fly 95% of the time and we have at least 30 males, it's pure noise out there. They are very busy and do a lot of guarding the feeders and chasing the other birds.

Here's a dog named Jake going for a walk in the mountains. He brought his toy bunny with him and insisted on carrying it around. I love his determined look, as if he is on a mission to get that bunny somewhere in an efficient manner. His owner said she was glad it wasn't a real bunny.

I can't imagine humming bird "din" ... love the dog and his bunny. Glad your fishing season is on its way.

You can be far out in the woods and hear the male hummingbirds shrilling as they fly. They will even fly up to you, very friendly.

The pooch with his bunny wabbit is too cute.

Isn't he, though? I'm picturing loading up the car for a ride in the country, and don't forget that rabbit.

Once the river goes down our real summer starts, or at least that's how I feel today.

JJ you have got to go to Colorado. It is so beautiful and take the scenic
way if you have the time. It is worth it. I can just see those hummingbirds!

Better the noise of hummingbirds than automobile traffic!!!
Don't fool around with Jake's bunny!!
Gurl, it looks like you live in the country--it looks so quiet, peaceful, not a trouble in the world type of life but we know different, don't we?

We sure do. It's always something here.

Not sure what is happening with the weather.
We had a four days heat wave that broke all kinds of temp.
The last one was in the 1920's
For me I believed that this is happening with the global changes.
We had some weird weather all over the country and then some.

It certainly has been an unusual weather year all around the country. As for global warming, I see new weeds becoming established around here as our climate trends warmer: it has the effect of lowering our altitude.

I'll be back in a few.... Ok. Thanks for sharing. Along with Teal and Dottie, I'm glad I have visited your area.

I feel guilty every time I post some pictures, but sometimes just gotta do it.

Good that you only had high water... I just remembered the people in the mid-west and along the River who were flooded out of their homes. Some were supposed to be out until mid August. Naturally there won't be much left besides mold. Haven't heard another word about their plight on the tube. Love that mountain shot... that's why I'm trying to live long enough to get out west!

I feel for those farmers who were intentionally flooded out to relieve pressure on the levees, and like you say, the damage to the homes is every bit as bad as was experienced in New Orleans post Katrina.
