Good News Bad News

The good news is that FEMA responded to my appeal and granted me more money to fix my road. It's about 1/10 of what it's going to cost me, but certainly is welcome.

This is what my upper driveway needs to look like:

This is how it looks now (in case I haven't shown it to you many times before this):

The bad news is that a second excavation contractor has confirmed that my upper driveway is indeed in really bad shape and might not make it through the winter, never mind being safe to drive vehicles on.

He showed up after dark last night, so just imagine me here alone and headlights appear at the end of my bridge. Looters? No, it's Larry.

Larry says that it'll take at least 100 truck loads of dirt to fill the side of my driveway, and to save money we should take dirt off my property where we can find it. I think I've got some to spare behind the red cabin, saving tens of thousands of dollars, although it will not be 100 loads worth.

I know it sounds kind of silly to say 'we can't find any dirt' on the 30 acres where our cabins are, but between the rock cliffs and the river and the cabin yards, and the tons of sand deposited by the flood, there isn't very much just plain dirt suitable for fill.

Having confirmation that my road may not make it through the next bout of wet weather is definitely not good news. It means that when I see it start raining or snowing I need to go move my truck up onto the highway somewhere. This will last for several months until major work can be done, and there is some question about how the equipment would get down here to start that work.

But anyhow, news is news, even when it's bad.

That is a tough thing, and I second Martin's words. But you seem to be handling the whole thing without delay, which I believe is what knocks a lot of people flat on their ass - putting it off, I mean.

Martin is so cute and he does come up with words.

This just seems to be bad news, more bad news. It is a good thing that you are a strong woman to get through all this alone.

Yeah, that's what I think, too. Mr. TBend has never really explained why he didn't drop out of his bowling leagues and come here to help when disaster struck. I suppose he'd say the money he'd paid for them wasn't refundable, and anyway, I can handle anything.

In the bottom photo, which is your house?

It's on the other side of the river, and you can see the three bedroom windows.

yOU CAN NEVER FIND DIRT WHEN YOU WANT IT BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT IT IT IS EVERYWHERE!!! (Sorry about the caps lock!)
Looks like it is goingto take you a couple of years to get things back to where they were and hopefully better.
Now I would volunteer to help but I have a bad back--oh and bad legs--plus bad arms plus, the truth? I woudl make it worse--you don't want me fixing anything!!

wow!this is a huge project there. Will this ever get better later on and something that you have to work with most of your life there. As for me.I think to find another place to live.I know that this is your business but for me could not handle the drama or tragedy there.
I know that you are a strong woman and good luck there and I mean it.

The property has been in the family for 100 years, so it's not so easy to just pick up and move as if it was a troublesome tract home. But thanks for the good wishes.

I realize dirt is scarce because I have to buy it to fill Rex's holes.
