Have a Good Laugh

You can all have a good laugh at us. Here we sat, dumb and happy thinking we knew what the beavers in our river were up to, and that we had a handle on it. But today we got to looking at the side stream, and there are three large beaver dams in it, with largish-ponds forming behind them. This side steam is a seasonal creek, about 6 inches deep most places, and it's usually dry by this time of year.

Our main concern is controlling the mosquitoes that are breeding in these ponds. We can float some stuff on the water that will kill the larvae, but need to decrease the surface area so it won't take so much.

So today Mr. Troutbend put on waders and stirred up the dams to release some of the water. The dams have sticks strewn around on top, but there is dirt and rocks underneath so there is more structure than it appears. The beavers will probably repair the damage we did today.

Hah-hah on us, Bucky Beaver, Incorporated pulled a fast one on us.

Shooting the beaver sounds dire; hope you don't have to resort to extermination.

We can see good-sized rocks Bucky moved to construct the dam, it's very interesting, and he is indeed an engineer.

I am glad that Bucky lives on.

We need to get out there and wrap a bunch of trees with chicken wire. They don't hibernate, so it's a year-round challenge.

Beavers are busy little critters, aren't they? They can do a lot of damage, however, if left to their own devies.

I asked a visitor here who has to shoot beavers all the time to maintain the integrity of his lake in Illinois if I should ask him to shoot our beaver and he said no, because it might not die right away: it might crawl up on the bank where we couldn't get to it, and it'd really stink. Or it could get stuck underwater and eventually surface (dead) and really stink. It was good to get his opinion because I have no idea all the issues in a deal like this. We're still at the live and let live stage.
