Fed Ex

I ordered some seeds and plants last week and totally forgot that they would ship the seeds right away until I noticed part of the order had been charged to my credit card. Oh shoots! They were going to ship it to Colorado right away and I'm not there yet.

UPS has an arrangement with the post office to deliver packages to our mail boxes, but not Fed Ex. Just in case, I called my friend who works at our post office and warned her that a package might come. But that didn't do any good: the seed company emailed today that Fed Ex wasn't able to deliver the package because 'that business is closed for the winter.' That business being my house.

I told them it surprises me that Fed Ex is so caring all of a sudden because even when we ARE there, they won't come down the driveway to the house, they tie the package to the gate up there on the highway where anyone could steal it, and we don't even know it's there until we stumble across it.

I'd figured they'd do the same with this one, and I'd get it when I arrived. So they contacted Fed Ex and told them to re-deliver it on Friday, the day I'm driving to Colorado.

Well, they are not going to find me there, because I won't arrive until late that afternoon, so I hope to heck they tie it to the gate.

"That business" made me chuckle... sorry for your woes though!

The package finally got here yesterday, one little tiny padded envelope with seeds in it. Such a little item for all the trouble getting it here. The rest of the order is coming in a month - tomato plants developed for short growing seasons, developed in Russia.

Good luck with that!

It was like pulling teeth, but now that I'm all set here, I'm hoping our troubles are over.

It does, kind of.

About my UPS comment.....

I was figuring it costs UPS *less* since they make one stop at the post office instead of many stops on many country roads. Some packages are probably too big for the mailbox tho, so maybe your theory is correct.

Yes, there must be some size limit on what they can leave at the post office, although I've never tested it out.

UPS won't come down my long driveway in the winter b/c it is either under snow or too muddy. I guess step vans don't have 4-wheel drive. Typically, they either leave it at our little P.O. or call me and tell me they're leaving it at the head of the driveway so I can go down and get it right away.

Our apartment in Queens was on the 6th floor, one elevator. The UPS delivery guy didn't want to take the time to come up. He would ring our bell and leave a "sorry you weren't here" note in our mailbox, and then would run to drive up the street before anyone could head him off. We also had a package room but that was for the regular mailman (who had a girlfriend in the neighborhood and wouldn't show up sometimes. His name was Walter).

This reminds me of my last job where we shipped DVDs all over the country, and after 9/11, the instructions for the ones going to New York City near Ground Zero were very complicated.

You're leaving tomorrow?! Please be careful. Gonna have a cat passenger?
comment by steeve on Feb 28, 2013 7:36 AM ()
Cat for sure. I already am scheming how to trick her into settling down sooner than later, she is such a joy when she surrenders to the moment and looks at the scenery.

UPS actually made a second attempt to deliver a package to me. I am
stunned.

In the old days they'd sometimes leave them with the neighbors, but any more, who can trust their neighbors?

From the local paper in Colorado. They have a good photographer.

That mail thing seems to be something new. The UPS tracking shows the package on the truck for delivery and it gets delivered to the post office instead of to me. Takes an extra day which is no problem as long as the item isn't sensitive to cold.

I think the shippers have to pay extra for that post office service because not all packages come that way via UPS. Our old UPS guy used to come right up to the house, but the new ones can't be bothered.

And people complain about the mailmen!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Feb 27, 2013 8:04 PM ()
If I ordered more stuff for delivery I'd probably get better at it, maybe build a little shelter at the top of the driveway for the packages. But what would I do with all that stuff?
