Extroverts Live Longer

I saw a piece on the health news the other day that outgoing, friendly people live longer because the extrovert gene is near the long life gene on our DNA.

If this is the case, my friend Diane is going to live forever.

Diane just can't help herself. She'll be driving down the highway, see a stranger fishing, and stop to talk to them.

She is one of those people who talks to everyone. One time she was complaining to me that she just wanted to be alone, took a walk around the lake, and was sitting there, and people kept coming up and talking to her. Some of them she knew, and some were strangers.

Picture it: she's sitting there thinking her thoughts, and people just won't leave her alone. I don't believe there wasn't some encouraging going on from her end. I could sit there all day, and nobody would come up and start talking to me.

I'm jealous, of course.

I am more like you and I believe you are correct in your assumption that she somehow encouraged people to talk to her.

I thought it was so funny when I realized she was complaining that nobody would leave her alone. She has this invisible neon sign over her, a big arrow pointing at her head: Talk to me.

Nice post. Pretty sunrise pic, too! I'm glad to know that friendly, outgoing people live longer because I definitely don't plan to die before I'm at least in my 90's. I love chatting up strangers - especially at grocery stores, when we're all standing in line. It passes the time.

That's the way to be. Having close family ties like you do helps, too.

I frequently talk to people at the grocery store and when I am walking but
feel like I take the middle between introversion and being like Diane.

I haven't given up hope that she will stop at your house. She never did call me back, but she might remember when she's driving across country.

I'm naturally sociable, politely outgoing and do tend to strike up conversations with people, but I have good radar, picking up when someone is open or closed to being spoken to. I think I'm comfortable with both introversion and extroversion inwardly and outwardly, but am not wildly one way or another. A nice balance....

Sometimes I wish I was more outgoing. I think life with Bubbles here has worn me down.

I think where you live has a lot to do with it. I used to have long conversations in the grocery store. People were always striking up a conversation with me and I would happily engage. Here, I can and do go months without anybody saying anything to me outside of church.

I think so, too. I try to be chattier when I go to the grocery store, and it works better in Colorado than Las Vegas, not very surprising.

Love your sunrise. Our view is to the west, so we get sunsets instead. I wouldn't stop my car to talk to someone, but I often strike up conversations with fellow shoppers and the various people I see on my walks. Nice to know there is an added advantage. Incidentally, there are times when non-locals don't respond in kind when I pass them and say hello. They are afraid a stranger talking to them might "want something". Felt like having a T shirt made that said, "Happily married, well-to-do, just saying hello because that's what we do on this island."

Sounds like a great tee-shirt slogan. Reminds me of the Denver radio show in the 1960s: Howdy Neighbor.

Obviously I will be living a long time unless I kill one of those people who interrupt when I am having private thoughts--but then I don't have PRIVATE thoughts!

I picture pulling up to your apartments in a rental car, and there's Martin, saying hello

well guess i will have to be more friendly.

You're one of the friendliest people I know.

Perk up! If I saw you sitting on a park bench, I'd definitely come over and talk to you.

And bring snacks.

Being an apprentice butcher the first thing my boss taught me was to talk to the customers and it just grew on me to talk to people.
Am not a gasbag as such , but like to engage in a conversation
Now that sunrise its a goodie, like my bed to much to get out and see the sunrise

I wonder how many of us overcome a genetic disposition to introversion and look like extroverts.
