Eloise, Mouse Slayer

Miss Eloise is feeling particularly special after catching two mice yesterday.

I woke up in the morning to discover she had one in the bedroom and it kept escaping. I was worried she would lose interest and wander off, but she stayed with it. Later, I found it dead in the hallway, fur all damp from being loved to death.

Then, last night there was another corpse in the hall. I'm glad she's not eating them because sometimes they don't get entirely eaten. This is easier. I scoop them up and put them outside for the wild animals.

PoohBear caught the first bug of the spring yesterday. What a good boy.

Hmmm... maybe I couldn't handle a cat. For some reason in my mind they would eat the mouse and no mess would be left behind. Now that I think about it, I highly doubt that would be the case!

They often leave some of the mouse - a tail, the hindquarters, etc. Eloise ate one in the bathtub one time - at least it was easy to hose the remains down the drain. The best is when they just leave the corpse for you to scoop up on a shingle or something and throw over your fence, then you know it's not coming back into the house (except as a ghost maybe).

I am proud of Eloise's dedication to mousing. She is making a useful
contribution to the household. Now if Rex would only contribute.

We're so lucky she has an aptitude for mousing. You never know if they will take to it or not.

The NYer magazine runs a cartoon caption contest. The latest cartoon depicts a mouse guarding his mouse hole, pointing a revolver at the cat. The caption I like best is the cat saying, "Six shots vs. nine lives. You do the math."

That's a good one. Very Clint Eastwood.

Max brings hapless geckos into the house and half eats them and throws up. I find spare parts here and there. If I find a live one, I trap him and put him outside. Eloise seems to enjoy her work, and although I am not willing to tolerate mice in the house, I feel sorry for all critters. It's a burden.

Up until a couple of years ago I was trying to ignore the mice, figured I had one at a time, then I got fed up when multiple babies started parading around the living room night and day. They were cute, but wouldn't stay that way, so I bought a live trap and caught 15 mice in three days in my kitchen. What an eye opener, and I didn't feel so sorry for them any more. Besides, I could hear one inside my stove trying to chew through metal. It's a wonder they haven't burned the house down by chewing on electrical cords.

she's not only beautiful but a mouser too!

I'll tell her you said she's pretty. She always likes hearing it.

Sheez a good mouser!

I wonder if anyone has done a study to see if it runs in their DNA. She was found in a parking lot as a tiny kitten, so I doubt her mother taught her anything.

All Angel has caught this year is a fly. I'm not going to tell her about Eloise's triumphs. She would feel so inadequate.

Angel's got Eloise beat out on the flies. We don't have any right now, but they will show up soon enough.

Well at least she has manners!
