When is Easter?

Mr. Troutbend sent me the following email. He's always thinking up interesting things to look for on the Internet:

Interesting facts about Easter from Wikipedia --

"Easter can fall on 35 possible dates—between March 22 and April 25 inclusive.

It last fell on March 22 in 1818, and will not do so again until 2285.

It fell on March 23 in 2008, but will not do so again until 2160.

Easter last fell on the latest possible date, April 25, in 1943 and will next fall on that date in 2038.

However, it will fall on April 24, just one day before this latest possible date, in 2011."

It's greening up slowly here. Yesterday was 40 some degrees, but very windy, so bitter cold with the wind chill. I went out to look at the fish but it was too cold to linger.

One of these days the first hummingbird will show up outside my window, but I hope they are somewhere warmer for now.

Now I am going to have to hang around until 2285 to see if he is right!

I might be here in 2038, if you're not around, I'll send you a thought, so be ready.

I suppose you didn't explain WHY Easter falls on different dates because you figured we were all knowledgeable enough to already know! Personally, I don't really care.

I only passed along what Mr. Troutbend sent to me, and it didn't occur to me to wonder why the date moves around, because I don't really care. Unlike you, some of us get through the day without fretting about what's wrong with other people having a faith in something beyond themselves.

Ted had his Easter last week but it wasn't fun.

That bunch does tend to avoid elements of the holiday they consider pagan, which tend to be the fun parts.

Your lovely Colorado home is waking up to spring, as is nature in Northwest Ohio. Everyone is saying how late Easter is this year, but it seems early to me because springtime is so late getting a foothold in the cold weather. Forsythia are just blooming now here, sort of exploded overnight, following the daffodils and hyacinths. Just a few tulips, with more to come. Sunny and 60 degrees today, but it didn't hit 40 degrees yesterday, with a chill wind and rain. It will be a chilly Easter Sunday! At least I can open the windows today for the kitties.

We got a couple of inches of snow overnight, but it's sunny today. The new branches on the willows along the river have turned yellow, reminding me of forsythia. Hello to your cats for me.

High 80s, sunny, low humidity, no rain and a breeze--no long before it will get Hot, Humid, rainy and hurricane warnings!

I'm glad someone's got some good weather. It has been 80 in Las Vegas, but no humidity to speak of, and breezy. They don't have tornadoes in the desert.

Re. the eggs, at my house we boiled at least a dozen or more once, then dipped them in red dye and served them in a bowl. Only a few were nested in bread. The fun was in choosing a likely looking "battle egg" from the bowl and beating up on your dinner partner's egg. You bump the other egg with yours, and if it cracks and yours doesn't, that's a point. You proceed till both ends of each egg are cracked, or one egg endures all bumps thus making that diner the winner. And if you got a slice of bread with a coin in it, you were going to have good luck. Ya heard it here.

What fun times. I was thinking of making some hot cross buns, but it doesn't have to be now, so I will probably wait until more people are around.

You posted a very accurate description of the weather in upstate New York!

Whenever I check your blog for new posts I enjoy seeing the Almost Live Delhi, NY webcam, and checking it just now, we've both got similar weather today, light precipitation. Mine's light snow.

Beautiful scene. I looked up Greek Easter and this year it coincides with "American Easter" (terminology in my house growing up). I don't know when that will happen again. We passed a Greek church yesterday and they were decorating the facade with candles in prep. for the burial rite, a beautiful ceremony where they carry the flowered bier through the streets. Ed said would I like to go and I said everybody goes for the rites on Thursday and Friday before Easter (they are stunningly dramatic) and it's like trying to sneak into a rock concert, and particularly difficult if you are not a regular member of the congregation. You all know I am not going to join any congregation and anyway, I'm sure they're all in English now -- hardly the same. I meet young Greeks now and they don't speak the language ... really.

I've always wondered about that bread with the colored eggs baked into it, if they are still edible after being baked on top of being hard boiled eggs in the first place.

It's snowing here this morning. We need the moisture badly, so I'm not complaining. Well, maybe a little bit.
