Here's a neat website about Memorable Kansas Restaurants

I found it because I came across a newspaper clipping in my files. It is a picture of an older couple eating in a restaurant. The caption says it is in Stafford, Kansas where the owners love jigsaw puzzles. They always have a couple of them going in the back room and customers are encouraged to help put them together. The finished puzzles are mounted on the walls of the restaurant for all to appreciate.

It is the Curtis Cafe in Stafford, Kansas. Follow this link for more pictures and a description of the food. Doesn't sound like the best food you'll ever find, but the total experience seems to make up for it.

Stafford is way out in the middle of the Kansas Nowhere on US Highway 50, and I would love to take that road trip some day.

What I think is funny is the menu says "choice of vegetable of the day" because there is only one vegetable of the day - the only choice is whether or not you're going to eat it.

Looks like a great pit stop. I let myself eat hamburgers every couple of years. I could order one. The thought of the dry, dusty road on the way there is appealing but I'm weird.

Unless we find placed like this to stop, we usually drive through Kansas as fast as possible. The speed limit on the Interstate was 80 mph last time we were there.

This is a discovery!

It reminds me of going to the antique store for lunch with you and Ted.

I am getting a huge kick out of the jigsaw puzzles. Maybe I'll get there one day. It's 140 miles from my brother and sister-in-law's farm near Abilene, but that's quite a hike for lunch and puzzles. Hmmmm....

In the big picture, 140 miles doesn't sound far, but I know how it can be, sometimes even 20 miles out of the way is too much. One time many years ago we were in Abilene for the night and asked that lady at the motel if there was a Chinese restaurant in town: "My stars! We're only 20,000 people here, and a person can only eat so much Chinese food!"

I love the idea of the puzzles. I line dance at a senior center where there is always a puzzle in progress. We are there once a week at night when the regulars are not there, so we never see the action. Every week the previous week's completed puzzle is at the far end of the long table and there is a new one started. Someone takes a picture of each finished puzzle and puts the picture in an album. There are such beautiful puzzles in the album. I stayed at a B&B in Ireland where the owner had completed puzzles the size of a card table top. He glued them to plywood and had them hanging on the walls.

I will try to remember to post the pictures of our cat 'helping' us put together a puzzle a few summers ago.

Never find these around here that's for sure.

Over there in Barre, Vermont I used to go to the Wayside Diner for good food. I wonder if it is still there.

Very cheap prices! Nice. Although I think all I could eat is a grilled cheese.

I was just reading about In and Out Burger, (west coast chain) and you can order a 'grilled cheese' there - two slices of cheese melted onto a hamburger bun with lettuce/tomato/onions if you want.

2.75 for a hamburger is very reasonable. They run about 6 bucks and up here.

I have never been to Carl's Junior (or is it Carl Junior's?) to see if their "Five dollar burger" really costs that. I thought maybe they were saying their burgers are as good as the ones restaurants charge $5 for.

I once ate at a restaurant that had antiques all over the place, including hanging from the ceiling.

Are you sure that wasn't my house? We went to a restaurant in Oregon once and one wall was filled with a big piece of furniture that was all drawers. They had cute little things stashed in the drawers so it was a lot of fun to snoop while we waited for our meal.

'Kansas Nowhere'--and that's why they do jigsaw puzzles!!!
When I use to drive around the USA I loved discovering places like this and no matter how they try to replicate them in the big cities they just can't!

It's been too long since we hit the road for a long cross-country tour.
