Computer Time

Mr. Troutbend has been out here in Nevada with his new laptop and I kept getting reports from him that he'd go days without receiving emails because of 'server problems.' This didn't make much sense but I couldn't deal with it long distance.

He also mentioned that he was able to log into our home wireless network without a password, so that was a bit of a concern since I didn't want to be sharing our network with the neighborhood.

So last night I undertook to put better security on the network. What a bucket of worms that turned out to be. It soon became apparent that his computer was not seeing our network to even try to log into it. After a few hours of research, setting up various passwords, renaming, changing the security protocol and several times getting shut out of the administration part of the router, I had all four computers going, and his was the only problem. I barely had to do anything for the other computers to magically connect, and there sat his, trying to get into some neighbor's network called 'Dont_touch_my_junk' that doesn't require a log-in.

Finally. Finally, I figured out our router has the two available frequencies - 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz, and was set at the 5. Apparently his network adapter can only pick up the 2.4. So once I reset the router, Bingo! Now it's connecting to our home network, his signal is much stronger, and all is well.

But I'll never get back those three hours of my life.

And I aged a couple of years just worrying that I had completely messed everything up. I guess it was worth something because I learned a few things.

I have the same policy as Gary. Ted does all of that and has gotten good
at it.

You should see him stand across the room when I start trying to hook up the DVD player.

Holy cow. Good job, I know little about my routers and wouldn't be able to reset the security on them without a lot of help.

Every time I get a new summer renter who wants to use the wireless network I cross my fingers and hope to heck things go smoothly. The last one came over to the house with an iPad, something I'd never touched before, and I just clicked on everything I saw until eventually he was hooked up. Guess I'd better write down what I learned yesterday so I don't forget.

Who am I kidding, I wouldn't be able to do any of that WITH help.

But aren't you proud of yourself now!
comment by crazylife on Nov 25, 2011 8:37 PM ()
Yes I'm proud of myself, but I still haven't shaken that feeling of sheer panic when it looked liked I'd messed things up beyond redemption.

You country folks sure talk funny--routers, Ghz,security, home networks, signals, etc. All Greek to me!

Tee hee, Martin. You lead a charmed life.

DH seems to have a lot of problems with computers too. Frankly, I can't believe computers were invented by them.

Mr. Tbend has this hands-off policy where he goes out of his way to not deal with the technical issues. I'm always a little surprised to find myself in charge.

You solved it -- great going. I could not have done it. Does Mr. T appreciate you?
comment by tealstar on Nov 25, 2011 1:19 PM ()
Yes, he does appreciate my efforts - what a treasure - and he kept his faith in my abilities even when things looked the bleakest for getting going again.

Hooray for the end of that headache! They don't make it easy, do they....
But one must have good password security with a wireless set-up. My dear brother, who doesn't have much hair left to begin with, was pulling his out when they converted to wireless. He loves it now, but, glory, there were lots of hiccups and glitches before everything was rockin'n'rollin. He also changes his password on a regular basis, too.

I hope it's secure now, looks like it is. He asked me, and I said 'at this point, I'm just glad you're connecting again.' But I didn't really mean that.

Make some lemonade! Think how much you would have had to pay for someone else to fix your computer problems during those same 3 hours. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I was sitting there thinking 'who can I hire to fix this mess?' But like you say, it worked out. It was a great Thanksgiving.
