Remote Information

All winter I use the Internet to watch the weather conditions at my other house.

I look at the airport camera in Loveland, Colorado that is pointed up towards my house.

Sometimes the camera will show the front range to be all socked in, but the skies will be cloudless and blue at my house because the low-lying clouds get trapped by the foothills below us, but there is no way to know that from 700 miles away.

I also look at the local weather forecast, which covers a large area, and is quite often not accurate for conditions there at the home place.

I can look at the road conditions near there via a camera pointed at the highway. Often, that camera isn't working.

And I can look at the level of the river in front of my house.

It's not as good as being there to see it for myself (this is the high water you see on the graph), but it's better than nothing. Of all the indicators available to me, it is the most accurate.

I wish my new generator was online so I could monitor its status.

I am going to do research to see about setting up a web app for it, but I don't have great hopes of success.

But even more, I wish the fox was online.

Next summer we are going to set up a motion-activated beaver camera so we can see them working on their dams. Or maybe we'll just set up the doorbell to ring when they are out there so we can run out and see them.

Can you imagine the doorbell ringing each and every time there is movement outdoors? Good thing you don't have a dog!

We've already got the yard light on a motion sensor, and if we notice it's on at night, we jump up and look for wildlife, but I have to admit it's less intrusive than the doorbell.

Goodness, you are a technology Goddess to. Gary is a lucky man.

I wish I really was a tech expert. When I really, really want something I somehow figure it out, but I feel like there is so much more I could do.

It would be neat to be able to have a remote internet camcorder to keep tabs on your place. Some of them are really amazing. Do you ever visit in the winter?
I'd miss the fox most of all....

Re winter visits: For a couple of years we went there for a week at the end of the year, and I really liked that for winding up year-end business. But then we got away from it, and it was such a relief not trying to figure out the driving weather coming and going. I could fly there for a quick visit, but would need a good reason to justify spending all that money.

My ISP there has blocked FTP uploads to my webpage (I have to come to Las Vegas to update it), not because of any malfeasance on my part, they just do that so they can control the amount of traffic on the lines and not have to upgrade them. So I can't run a webcam there, but it'd be fun.

I used to use the Delhi webcam to watch the snow fly when I was up at Donna's before her place sold. There are house-monitoring kits available if your willing to leave power and the internet on all winter. Very cool technology. Turn the heat up before you get home and stuff like that.

I always enjoy looking at the Delhi webcam when I go to your page. Now I'm thinking about whether that greedy phone company would let me put my home phone service on vacation hold but keep my internet running. That's a thought worth considering.

With today's technology, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you can't do all these things someday soon.

First, I need to figure out how to get a cell phone signal down there so I don't have to provide landlines for the guests.

love your pix as usual. The fox seems okay with your watching him. I love that fox.

The last few days I was there several deer came through the yard and they were so spooked seeing movement inside the house I didn't get a good picture of them.

Boy the poor beavers--can't even have privacy building their homes!!!

They don't deserve privacy, relentless pests. It'd be kind of nice if we figured out a way to train them to cut down some bushes that are taking over, but not going to happen.
