Christmas Creep

I saw this headline: "Christmas Creep Overtakes Two Holidays" and the first thing that came to mind was it had something to do with the Grinch. He's my definition of a Christmas creep.

Turns out they were talking about how early retailers have been trotting out the Christmas merchandise. I can probably remember when Thanksgiving was the big reveal day for Christmas stuff, and I can probably recall folks complaining about a few Christmas items showing up soon after Halloween merchandise was cleared from the shelves.

But according to the article Home Depot set out their Christmas decor items around Labor Day because once summer is over they claim they don't have much seasonal merchandise to fill the gap left by the charcoal grills and lawnmowers - mums and leaf blowers don't fill much space.

One person interviewed said she thought it was a good idea to put out the Christmas decorations so early because a person could spread their decor purchases out over a longer period of time. That's one way to look at it.

I don't really mind one way or the other because I enjoyed seeing the trees at Home Depot all lit up (I don't think our local store had them up as early as Labor Day). I don't spend money on Christmas decorations, so don't feel threatened by the commercialism.

One thing I do think about is that because most of this merchandise was made in China it was probably being shipped last spring some time. Somehow, that takes away a lot of the seasonal spirit for me.

Why talk about Christmas now--as bad as the merchants!! I LOVE the Christmas holiday and dream of what Santa is going to bring me but not until Dec. 1!!!!!!

Oh, screw you, Martin.

I have managed to ignore a lot of Christmas creep through the years. Not having kids helped in this. What I like: Light shows on houses around here and parties (and I loved New York parties) and the crisp weather. What I don't like: the frenzy to get this year's trendy toy, 40 or more presents for each child, and the canned Christmas music in all the stores.

It really does help to not have children. I think kiddies are brain-washed by TV to want more than they need. There is so much pressure on parents these days to 'provide' for the holidays, I feel sorry for them.

I try to ignore Christmas displays until Thanksgiving. Hobby Lobby is one place I go to shop when I can find some cash. They started putting theirs out in September. I walk right past it.

Some people appear to be threatened by the stuff in the stores, but it's as simple as walking by it like you do.

When (as) you get older, these things don't bother you. One learns to "go with the flow", which means to ignore it.

That's for sure.

I love the Grinch. It has always been part of our Christmas since the
kids were small. We all had a love affair with Dr. Seuss. I will take
Halloween decorations down tonight and my giant turkey will go out.

I have a pottery turkey casserole that would make a nice centerpiece. Almost donated it this summer, but changed my mind.

I went into the area in Wal-mart on Wednesday where the seasonal stuff is kept. I need a new apple picker since there are still so many apples on the trees.... Nope! I couldn't believe what I saw... More than a dozen decorated, lighted Christmas trees along with all the other Christmas stuff. Not even a chain saw bar or a can of bar oil... it's certainly isn't too late in the FALL season for that.

I'll bet Ace Hardware has all our seasonal needs and I don't mean Christmas.

And here YOU are pushing the Christmas Season on us at MyBloggers!!!!! B-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Why do you say this? I don't think I'm pushing anything, just re-stating a news article and expressing some of my personal feelings - what does that have to do with you?

Labor day?? Really... that's way too early. Cute pic and I agree - the Grinch is the Christmas Creep!

I had a second cousin who looked just like the Grinch.
