Our Cat Has P T S D

This time of year our tree squirrels are gathering their winter store of pine cones.

Early every morning and sometimes at dusk it sounds like someone is throwing rocks at the roof because the squirrel is up in the tree throwing down green pine cones. Bam! Bam! Bam! they hit the metal roof. What's amazing is how fast they rain down. Thud! Thud! Thud!

Yesterday morning Miss Eloise Kitty wanted to go outside in the worst way. She was stalking the squirrel, and he knew it, so he went up the tree a bit and scolded her, and then went to the top and started throwing down the pine cones. She had her ears back and each thud made her cringe. Last night when the next attack started, she was inside the house but had her ears back and was cringing behind the screen door.

It seems Eloise wimped out. When Brunswick was more feisty when we first got him, he would wimper and agitate when he saw large birds out on our lawn. But if we opened the pool door to let him go out and get a closer look (he couldn't have caught them -- we have a cage) he wouldn't go. Occasionally I'll find pieces of gecko, in the house no less, and that is the work of Max, killer cat. I have a feeling Max would be climbing the tree to get the squirrel.

It hasn't stopped her from going outside to look for squirrels to catch. The other day she compromised with a vole. I don't think she could catch a squirrel, and hope she doesn't try.

I hope she sticks to little snakes, mice and voles.

Poor Eloise. Angel hides behind the hot water tank whenever there are public fireworks.

She slinks around the same way when the generator comes on. Please give my regards to dear Angel.

Are you stealing the cones from the squirrels????????????

I'm raking them into piles, so you'd think the squirrels would be grateful - one stop grab and run.

We don't suffer squirrels, but we do have chipmunks. The cats manage to catch a fair number of the cute little buggers every summer. I'll find the remains on occasion, typically the hind feet and tail.

The fox ate most of the chipmunks, so we've only seen one this summer. We have ground squirrels that look a lot like chipmunks, but not as many of them, either.
