In the Camera: July 2014

My cell phone up on top of a mountain where it can get a signal so the minutes will download. We hiked up there this morning to retrieve it.

Mr. Troutbend's bowling car in lovely downtown Loveland, Colorado. He drove my truck to Las Vegas so I had his car. It's a Nissan Versa.

First iris I've ever gotten to bloom up here. My cousin in Illinois sent the bulbs last year. Another cousin in South Dakota sent some last year, and they were in the flood area. They came up through the sand, and didn't bloom, but there's hope for them.

I pet a friendly deer once on an estate in England. I love your pix. Why not camp on the mountain while you babysit your phone? It sounds like an adventure. Remember my car? Ed drives it all the time now. He drives long distances and says it saves his back. I drive the SUV now -- old and rusty. But, hey, it's wheels.

No big bowling ball on the top of his car?????

Irises, hyacynths, tulips, etc. don't bloom down here.

I have been trying to find some hardy Hibiscus. One of my neighbors has it
and it is lovely.

So you just leave the phone there for a day or so? I'd worry about the elements and animals...

It doesn't smell like food, so the animals wouldn't care about it, and there's no water source up there so they probably wouldn't bother to go over there. The weather is another thing, though. We had a big rain/hail storm the other night with lightning, and it crossed my mind that the phone could have gotten struck, and with that amount of rain, some of the moisture could have gotten into the bag. There is a very slim chance that hikers might come across it, but we have our name and address inside the bag so they know it's not abandoned up there.

Cath says they shouldn't flower the first year as they take awhile to settle in and bloom in the 2nd year if undisturbed.
good exercise to get phone call

I've been trying to get them going up here for 10 years. The problem is finding a spot with the right amount of sun, and the roots have to be buried not too deep so the sun can hit them, and not too much nitrogen fertilizer. Iris are so low maintenance, and we see them in abundance down at the lower altitudes, so it shouldn't be this hard. One good thing is the deer leave them alone.
