Brush with Greatness (Fishing)

With my monthly check from the fishing club comes a report of who was here fishing in the past month. I enter the daily income into a spreadsheet and I've started keeping track of who came so when I meet them in person I have an idea of how good a customer they are.

We try to get out there to say hello to the fishermen and thank them for coming to the property, but sometimes they think we are checking to make sure they have posted their authorization placard on their dashboard, so I don't rush out there every time. I notice that last month one of the guests was a former Denver area TV anchor man. He anchored the news for 38 years until he was laid off when two Denver stations merged. He saw it coming, so had gotten a community college degree to be a veterinarian assistant because since he was a kid he'd wanted to work as a vet.

It would have been nice to meet him, but just knowing he was here is good, too.

On Fox NFL Sunday show yesterday they were talking about Terrell Owens (T.O.) getting stem cell surgery in South Korea to repair his ACL. Here is how they described it: "You know when Peyton Manning had it and they took stem cells from his stomach fat, but T.O. said he didn't have any stomach fat, so they would have to take it from his butt. They sucked it out, and about 30 minutes later they injected it in his knee, and 3 or 4 weeks later he was running patterns."

I don't know how common this procedure is, or whether it is covered by insurance, but if I was contemplating a knee replacement, I think I'd look into this first.

It's good to see Mr. Fox putting on his winter coat. The stem cell surgery sounds interesting. I would be very surprised if Medicare covers it though.

Probably most insurance and Medicare don't cover it because it's too new, plus everyone thinks all stem cells come from aborted fetuses, so the anti-abortions are all against it. The pro athletes who've had the procedures done had to go to Korea.

I like that you greet your fishing guests. I'd probably have little treat bags of trail mix or something as a little yummy thank you for stopping, but that could get out of hand profit-wise. And I love to make a treat box of healthy biscuits for your handsome fox. Maybe I'll start looking for a vole cookie cutter to use!

The fishermen don't like a lot of chit-chat, they just want to get out there and fish, and most of them stop on the way and buy a sandwich from Panera or Subway. Most of the sites they go to are out in the middle of nowhere across a cow pasture, so they aren't really accustomed to or expecting hospitality. If nobody is staying in the rental cabin I let them use the porch to eat lunch on if the weather is inclement, and if there are women, I offer the use of the bathroom.

The fox's current batch of biscuits is cut in small ginger-bread man shapes. We know he likes the taste because he'll stop and eat one on the spot and then bury the next one. We saw him catch a vole once - gone in 5 seconds. If you blinked, you'd miss it.

I had gel injections in my arthritic knee. Supposed to last six months or so. It has been a year and still pain-free. Yay!

I was looking into some kind of chicken-related knee injections one time, then got better and didn't need them, but it's good to know something works.

That is a great fox and his tail is bigger than any other part of his body. If you ever coax him into being a pet, he would be fun (I think) to sleep with. Buddy would be outraged, I'm sure. One way to diffuse paranoid reactions from visiting fishermen is to invite them for "tea". But maybe that's too much work?

I would so love to touch the fox's fur, but on the other hand I don't want to compromise his wildness. Maybe if I was here year-round to look out for him it would be different, but he needs to maintain his independence.

The fishermen bring their own beverages of choice. Sometimes I offer them baked goods like cookies or fresh bread, but they don't always want them. At least one of them told me he is on a gluten-free diet.

His tail is a wonder. I bet it does mean that we will have a cold winter.
When he shelters he can curl it around himself like an afghan.

According to what I've read, they sleep out in the open, even in the winter, so you're right, the tail is very important. There is a little tiny animal under all that fur so his tail probably is just like an afghan.

That fox is so cute... love it! Interesting about the stem cell stuff... Sounds like that may be the way of the future!

I hope so! People tend to think of the source of the stem cells as being aborted fetuses, but not necessarily so, especially when people can provide their own.

Oh how I'd love to have that tail around my neck........just kidding.

That winter tail is his crowning glory. I keep an eye out for fur in the yard to send to you, but not much luck, I only have a tiny bit, and of course he won't start shedding again until next summer.

The fox's tail is full. That means something, I think. Maybe he wants you to adopt him.

I'll have to look at last year's photos to see if this year's tail is fluffier. If it is, maybe we are in for a cold winter.

I LOVE the fox!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Oct 10, 2011 4:21 PM ()
I wish you could see him in person because people are always surprised at how he is right here close and doesn't get spooked when we go outside.
