Bird Nests

This first nest was built on our extension ladder hung on the back wall of the garage.

image

We had to move it in order to use the ladder, and the builder moved on to another location.

Then, someone else came and built a different nest on the top of a rake that is hanging on that same garage wall.

It has one little light brown egg in it. Sorry it's blurry, I was standing on a milk crate stretching out with the camera.

We're not sure what kind of bird is going to hatch out, but time will tell.

On top of a rake? Don't think I heard that one before...

A lot of people in town have bird nests built on top of their porch light fixtures and in their hanging flower pots.

Try placing some things out that would attract the birds instead of ladders and stuff you actually need to use. Down here they choose chimneys -- even though it's Florida, some people still like to build a fire for the cold nights we do get. One such house no longer uses their fireplace. Their chimney has had an osprey nest for some years.

Well, we do have about a zillion trees and bushes and rock cliffs, and 30 birdhouses hung in various places - all the sort of thing you'd think the birds would like, but no, they wanted to use the top of the rake.

birds are kind of like people. They spend more time fighting over food and territory than they do getting on with life.

That's so true of the hummingbirds at the feeders.

I wonder if another bird would use the abandoned nest if you placed it up in a tree...

There are some birds like cuckoos that will lay eggs in the nest of another bird and let that bird hatch the eggs. It's where the word cuckold came from.

The old myth was that we should never touch a bird because its mother wouldn't come back, but over the past couple of years stuff I've read said it's worth a try putting them back in the nest. No guarantees though.

People sell used nests on Craig's List. I might try it with the robin's nest from the garage. You have a better selection, although the top one doesn't look so great.

I wonder what people want them for. I have several more abandoned nests around here - like a gold mine.

Have you seen the parents around? They wouldn't go too far from the nest.

Mr. YouKnow saw the bird, said it covered the nest, but hasn't noticed it there lately. I keep forgetting to see if I can get a glimpse of it.
