The Bear!

Quarter of three this afternoon I was at the kitchen sink and here came a nice-looking black bear sauntering across the back yard. I went outside to try to get a better photo, and it took off up the mountain. They can really run fast, and I'm glad to see he's not interested in being around people.

This is the time of year when they start eating a lot, getting ready for hibernation. We've got ripe chokecherries in parts of the yard, and of course there are the ever-popular hummingbird feeders.

We have bear around here, but they're brown and not really dangerous although they can be destructive. Hopefully he'll continue to avoid people!

I hope this guy can find enough to eat in the woods without looking for our trash bin or bird feeders.

Be careful about food trash but I know you really are. I can't help but worry about you and bears.

I'm not going on any hikes up in the woods for awhile.

When the bear goes into hibernation, is that kind of like Mr. YouKnow going to Las Vegas for the winter????

Except the bears don't email every day.

Bring in your honey pots, too!

A couple years ago there was an underground beehive, and the bear dug it out of the ground - big claw marks in the dirt!

You live in a virtual zoo! Bear, elk, foxes, deer.... sounds like a tiny corner of paradise.

I'm so glad to see a bear because it has been a couple of years and reassures me that nature is still with us, as if there was a doubt. On the other hand, this is a warning that we can't put trash in the bin until trash day, and the guests have to be careful about leaving food in coolers on the back patio and inside their cars. But overall, I'm thrilled.

And elk?????????????????????????????????

That elk was just passing through. The bear probably lives up the stream behind our house during the winter.
