Afternoon Hike

Tomorrow is cell phone minutes day. We have a cheap phone plan, and minutes are downloaded each month so the phone has to be on and receiving a signal. If we miss the download, we have to call India from a landline in town, and it takes a couple of hours to get them to send the minutes.

We don't have any signal here at the house, so have to take the phones up on top of the mountain where we can see the tower on another mountain, and there are two bars if we get the angle right.

This is where I set off up the hill:

I climbed and climbed until I could see the cell phone tower in the distance:

I fastened the phone to a tree with a bungee cord. It is wrapped in a plastic bag.

This is the top of the mountain where I could get a signal:

While I was up there, I used the cell phone to call Mr. Troutbend in Las Vegas. This keeps him on his toes because he never knows when I'll call him. Actually, I could call him any time at all, but this was from the top of a mountain.

Tomorrow I'll go back for the phone. I hope I can find it again.

This is an odd combination of roughing it and civilization.

It sure is! Sometimes it seems like one of those can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em deals.

I'm fortunate enough to have service at the house. Makes me want to dispose of the landline. Anyway, my plan also puts minutes on the phone at the beginning of the month but there is a code I can type on the add minutes screen that will update the minutes if for some reason the phone isn't on when the minutes are delivered. You'd think that the nice folks in India would tell you if you have an option like that, but if it was me, I'd ask! On the other hand.... any excuse for a hike is a good excuse!

Oh... when I do it, I enter the code in the phone, not the computer. It's something really simple, like 5 5 5.

We have that same option. It requires us to go to town where we can get a wireless signal on our computer and at the same time have a cell phone signal so we can type in the code. We always try it, but it never works, so we end up calling India. They spend a lot of time giving us codes like that to type in, then finally refer it to a supervisor who can push the minutes down without us typing in the code. We just wish they'd cut to the chase and do that in the first place instead of wasting everyone's time. All this is what motivates us to avoid missing the minutes coming in at all costs.

Wow! What an elaborate plan. Wandering hikers could find it wonder what on earth is going on.

The plastic bag has our name on it, but there had better not be wandering hikers because that's our private land.

A very ingenious solution.

It'd be more ingenious if it was easier to implement. Usually when I'm here alone, I take it to town for my friend Diane to baby sit, but that's another form of inconvenient ingenuity.

Too funny!!

Nice to hear from you. Some of my cousins from Colorado are driving from British Columbia to Calgary, and I thought of you. If you see a strange older couple, just keep going.

This sounds really weird. Lovely spot though. Did you take a lunch?

Up on top of that mountain, I remembered my fear of heights, wondered how to get down safely, and seriously wished I'd brought camping gear so I could spend the night. I'm not looking forward to today's return trip, but this time I'm wearing better shoes.

Just reading the word hike I got tired!!! But it does look beautiful up there.

It's not a stroll along a beaten path, that's for sure.
