Labor Day on the River

For the first time since we started the vacation rentals, both cabins were rented for Labor Day. A fisherman coming from the fishing club called Friday wanting to rent one on Sunday night, but none available. Then, he called yesterday afternoon and asked if they could come at 9:30 p.m. and camp out somewhere on the property so they could get an early start.

I was trying to think where they could pitch a tent that time of night without disturbing the other guests. And there was the problem that they'd never been here before, and they'd have to find a spot in the dark. We settled on the fishing parking area because it's flat and easy to find.

I strung an electric cord across the bridge and set up a floor lamp out there so they would have light when they arrived. It worked out perfectly.

Here is their campsite this morning, you can see the lamp to the left there, and the lounge chair I put out. They were better organized than I expected, brought a camp stove and plenty of chairs and coolers.

They paid me with a bottle of Merlot and 6 cold beers.

The weather is just beautiful today. It's sunny and warm, but then the breeze comes up and tells us not to worry, eventually winter will come. Everyone here is hoping for normal precipitation this winter, or at least 80 percent of normal, if that's all we can get.

My cat is doing well. We have three different kinds of dry food for her, and are trying to figure out which she likes. Cats have that ability to let you know that there is something wanting in the food department.

Here she is with the mouse she caught the other night. I threw it outside for the fox.

Tonight, she and I are going to sleep next door in the rental cabin so she can have a go at the mice over there. Two different guests have described seeing a mouse go into a hole near the outlet where the TV is plugged in, so I'm going to try to find it and stuff it with steel wool.

Umm. What bliss to sit on the screened porch at the Brown Palace and
have a glass of wine while looking at the river!

They set up chairs out back and read books most of the weekend. I was grateful that they didn't use the barbecue or the fire pit so they stayed clean for the next people.

That campsite is stunning.

It's really just the end of the old road that turns into a footpath, so the tent blocks out some of the dusty, weedy part. It was so much fun to have someone put it to good use.

I love the camping picture with the lamp. All the comforts of home indeed.

I put that lounge chair out there by the lamp. It looked so inviting out there in the dark, a little island of cheer, a person could read a book.

Dr. Michael Fox, the vet who writes a syndicated column, says cats are carnivores and do best when fed wet food and if they eat too much cereal in their dry food, they don't do as well. Just something more to think about, huh? Yuch on the mouse. Don't tell me the fox will eat it? I think Eloise is getting happier by the day.

We do the same thing with our cat's wet food and also get awakened by cat looking for new food. Why is that?
reply by boots586 on Sept 4, 2012 4:53 PM ()
She has both wet and dry food, and we put water in the wet food, that she drinks off first, and I have to start paying attention to which flavors she prefers, because she'll eat a little and then ignore it until I dump it out and put down a new flavor. If she doesn't have the dry food, she lets us know, actually wakes us up at 2 am to come look at her food dishes.

Sounds like a busy time.

It wasn't too bad, though, because they all cleaned up before they left, and nobody used the barbecue grills so they are still clean, ready for the next guests. It's funny what little things become important, isn't it?

So is the cat's name Eloise?
We are having a beautiful day here--what I call 'tourist weaher'--too bad they are fixing the pool and the beach will be crowded so I am off to The Point!
Happy Labor Day! (And I want to see ID before you drink that wine and/or beer!)

Yes, the cat's official name is Eloise, and I call her kitty most of the time.

Good thing you're not a teetotaler.

That's for sure. The people at the Brown Palace also gave me a bottle of wine, so I'm set for awhile here.
