Retaining Wall Progress

The material for our new retaining wall and steps was delivered today.

The color is supposed to be sort of like granite. There aren't many color choices, and this seemed like the way to go. If I decide it's too light, I'm going to get some of that concrete stain and spray some brown on it to match the house.

Here are some pictures from today's hike up the mountain to retrieve the cell phone:

Look at the size of these tree roots growing in the rocks.

I came down by following this dry stream bed. It must have been pretty when there was water in it many decades ago.

It's important to document the progress of pine beetle tree kill on our land. We'd like to try to control it by cutting down the affected trees, but most of it is in areas too remote for us to get to.

I hadn't thought of that.

Really beautiful area. Think of the hike as healthful.

Yes, it was very aerobic, but glad to say my heart rate went down quickly after each challenge.

Those stone steps are going to be beautiful!

It looks like it will last forever, and that's where a lot of the beauty lies. The guys who first said they'd do the project were going to do a dry flagstone wall, and that might have looked pretty for a few years, but not durable.

The climb looks pretty hard to me. I love those dry stream beds.

The second day's hike was better because I looked for a safer way to climb. I study stream beds because I love them in landscaping. We have one in Las Vegas that came with the house, not as pretty as the natural ones, but looking at it cheers my heart.

Water or not, pine beettles or not, roots growing through rocks or not you live in pretty country!

I thought about making a movie of the hike, but didn't want everyone to hear all the hard breathing I'd be doing from the climb.
