An Acre's Worth of Grass Seed

"One year to seed, seven to weed" refers to the time we have to get grasses established to crowd out weeds.

The native grass seed in this 50 pound bag is worth at least $300, but the land trust that manages my conservation easement bought it with a grant they obtained for their members, so it didn't cost me anything.

The mix contains irradiated triticale, a fast-growing cover crop that will give the slower-growing grasses time to get established, and then it will die off because the irradiation makes it sterile.

Like any seed, there is so much promise.

It's great you didn't have to pay for it. Later on when it has taken hold, post another photo. (Love your response to greatmartin.) Our lawn hasn't been in a disaster but it doesn't look good and needs weed treatment and edging. Ed doesn't want to get a pro to maintain it and the bushes as well. I used to trim bushes but now when I try it, I get sick. Will just have to get used to the grunge look.

We're going to have a good time strewing it around.

I hope the promise comes to fruition.

It is shaping up to be an el Nino year - wetter, which will be sorely needed for raising grass because it will take awhile for us to get our irrigation system set up again.
